Which cam is best for Snorkeling in the Maldives?

This resort on the maldivian Island of Dheru is called "Jawakara" and was the best island we explored so far (actually it's two islands connected via a 600m long bridge).

Best SETTINGS:
4k30 or 60fps  (30 for low light)
4:3 aspect - so you can re-frame if you didn't have your subject centered well
Rocksteady stabilization on, wide FOV
Option: underwarter color

TRANSFER speeds:
  Nano (128gb version):    ~500 mbytes/sec !!!
  Action5 (internal mem): ~300 mbytes/sec
  from SD card:                    ~80  mbytes/sec

BATTERYLIFE:
really good efficiency! Action5 runs very long, little Nano runs "long enough" and is re-charged quickly with it's screen module...
Never was an issue in our 2 weeks of snorkeling!

30 sec into the flight something awesome happend!

This is a recent flight (unusual for me to edit my footage so "fresh"). Wanted to test the Caddx Peanut more. Before these flights I had more jello, tried to make a video to show the influence of props - but it was inconsistent. Generally I use 5" copters with new props and ND16 filter on the caddx all the time - that gives the best results. The low weight of the cam is nice, and quality more than sufficient - what do you think? Here I opted NOT to stabilize the peanut footage, because this way I have the full 2880x2880 fisheye raw video - here you can crop and zoom in post and be flexible (to look up or down if neccesary). As I said in the video: this one inconsistency with the power button on the Peanut should be changed: if on it's own battery: power button pressed once means: turn on and rec if on external power: power button once = turn one, another press needed to stat recording

Runcam Mipi or Caddx Polar?

Mipi is definitly faster (in photography terms - fast shutterspeed, less motion blur) while Polar gives the overall nicer and smoother image! See the full review to decide which cam you like more! I'm not so sure if many users will like the Polar on RTF Freestyle quads tho (looks like new quads now rely on Polar/Mipi since they're the only option with stock :)
While filming this I could definitly feel the advantage of 120fps (DJI cam) for freestyle flying!
All flight scenes in the beginning were after sunset and they are in order of filming. So it was of course getting darker but I flew them back to back with little time delay. It's a difference like day and night ;) Yet they share a lot of common properties: 60fps HQ mode only, no cam options to be set (except with solder on joystick...) 16:9 only (but with wider FOV than DJI stock) Small, cheap, AVAILABLE - better than Nebula (except their Pro version).

DJI FPV: ND Filters vs Jello

While this drone doesn't satisfy everybody (especially since it has been overhyped) it's still a pretty good fast flying action cam. Only if you fly slow, or in certain extreme situations you get ugly vibrations that cause wobbly, jello issue in your footage.
►Freewellgear NDFilters (they sent me the filters for free)

If you compare DVR (unstabilized) footage vs. Rocksteady stabilized footage from the drone - you see how good the stabilization works - but it's not a magic tool that eliminates all the shakes (like Gopro hypersmooth?). So if we help a bit by reducing the ammount of light on the sensor, the shuttertimes can be longer (1/120 is my suggestion). BUT: you shouldn't stay on AUTO exposure, because the cam tries to increase ISO to get enough light. Well maybe you can stay on auto if you chose the right ND filter for your current daylight situation. You can see this in the camera settings, it actually tells you the EV (exposure value) in manual mode. EV should be 0 or maybe -0.3 while ISO is on 100 (you see in my video that I had to use the ND8). Hope this helps you capture even better footage with this drone, happy flying (and filming), Mario

Insta360 SMO 4k Review (compared to Gopro7, Flightfootage

For this review I took my classic approach: compare the new cam to a good known reference (Gopro7) - first in various scenes with low movement (better picture quality even with low youtube bitrate).

Overall I was stunned by the imagequality, very sharp, good dynamic contrast
Not good: - light changes are in steps sometimes (but light handling isn't that bad) - reliability: on 4 flights I had 2 shutdowns - don't know the cause yet - but I have a friend with similar issue - Jello: even with ND16 I had some nasty wobbles in sunny conditions (might be the fault of my worn folding props on the sector?) Those of you who already have the SMO: do you have the "shutdown" issue as well? How do you power the cam (I use the balance plug as shown).

If you buy this cam, please consider banggood. I don't earn affiliate money but they keep sending me stuff - so it should be a win win ;) Please 👍 and 🔔 thanks ;-) it helps a lot! Why I sent my Insta360 One R back

With these kinds of reviews I will not make any money or get many review items offered but they will have the most benefit for you - and these honest reivews are quite rare on tha Netz ;)

Weight: Core: 42gr | 4k/360 lens: 42gr | Battery base: 34gr = 118gr + Frame: 52gr = Total weight: 170gr ●▬▬▬LINKS▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● Resolution comparison in Excel (PDF) http://bit.ly/2NEtwOx

►Sector5 flight: this is your typical insta cam on a drone (here my first try actually). of course the insta is heavier and larger than a gopro7, stabilization is great, possibilities are awesome with 360! but this wears off faster than you think and I ended up with just 2 flights on my drone in 3 months. ►Jet Chase: The next day I was eager to chase my friends on the field. Normally I try hard to have the object I wanna chase in the center of my DJI cam - so the gopro would also record it. With the 360 cam you dont have to care about aiming the shot - because you can turn the sphere in post production and look almost anywhere. You just have to bring your copter close enough to the aciton. And here's the downside of the insta: if I'm not REALLY close, I have to zoom in quite a bit, else the JET is just a DOT. Zoomed in this quickly degrades to 720p or lower of resolution... ►Hiking: Another use for this cam, no drone used - just a longer selfie stick in your backpack and you get a funny looking 3rd person view - which you can - again - look around freely in post production. This is especially fun when you dont have to much time for framing the shot while in the action. Also the 360 on a longer stick makes for nice scenes if you're high up and dont have a drone. attention - dont watch this if you have vertigo :) ►Gopro7 vs Insta4k Module: Since they basically give you the "normal" 4k cam module for free - you will buy it. The modularity is part of the appeal, right? But even tho the insta is really sharp (do we want maximum sharpness?) the Gopros video was much more pleasing to watch! Gopro just deals so much better with the jello vibrations from my copter...

CADDX Loris "4k60", Ratel, Nebula analog Latency, Image quality and a BUZZARD!

If you're here for the Buzzard, check 11:46 ;) - in my Caddx Cam-Review I didnt compare the digital image vs. stock DJI, because we already know it doesnt look good. I measured the analog latency and give you an idea of the 4k60 quality you can expect from the 10gr Loris board cam.

FPV Cam Latency

Download (or preview online!) the most current > XLS Latency Sheet
FPV Cams "Latency" or "LAG"

It is very important to see what your FPV plane/copter "sees" in REALTIME and react to eveade certain model death within milliseconds!

There is always some delay involved - but you should choose components to keep this minimal.
With high latency flying FPV feels like being drunk. Flying a non stabilized copter get's impossible soon - you fly worse than you actually need to. While you may not notice latency directly - without it you can become a better pilot.

What components have an impact on latency?
+++ FPV cam:
Time from image capture (lens, chip) - to the output on the video cable.
Between those 2 events you have the image processing on the cams chip - so the right cam is important. See the Latency Excel Spreadsheet for most current measurements.

Older cams could add as much as 100ms of latency - this is REALLY a big deal!
Current cams are down as low as 5ms.
One problem here:
"unsharpness of measurement": each 16 or 20ms (NTSC or PAL) you get a new image. This means 60 or 50 pictures per second. it wont get faster than that (on analog video).
So everything below 16ms cant be directly measured. The moment you hit a signal (power on LED in my case) can be at a random position within this timespan of 16ms.
So I repeat many measurements and look for the lowest latency and the average - which is the probbability of seeing stuff the right time :)

+Video Transmission:
ANALOG transmission DOESNT use buffering. It doesnt use hightech chips that have to calculate a lot of stuff - it just transmits a power-signal (Video encoded in NTSC or PAL) over the air.
IT DOES THIS AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT!  (~ 300.000km/sec)
So the myth "over distance latency increases" is bullshit.
OK - if you're flying to the moon (384.400km) - it will get noticeable - but within reasonable distances you can forget it (each 300km would mean 1ms latency added).
I was able to measure video latency - but it's really in nano-seconds range on my oscilloscope :)

DIGITAL transmission however - this is another story. You have to ENCODE images (lots of them) into numbers - transmit them - and decode them on the other side. Clever minds try to make good algorithms and fast chips - but we're not there yet. Fastest systems are around 50ms - which is quite high compared to analoge vid...
See my review of the FPV Blue system - one of the most promising, very community interactive, projects that actually work, and can give great results!

++Control link:
So: you have a fast cam, see the obstacle (jumping tree, branch,...) asap - but HOW LONG does it take to convert the THUMB movement on your remote's stick to a control correction on the plane (servos) or copter (motor RPM change).
Drone Mesh did some good tests (also with osciloscope and decoding of signals on the screen).
I tried to test this myself - that's a lot of work - not finished my video to this - will update you. In the meantime whatch his videos!
No final results yet, it's a complicated matter - but I noticed the difference between ezUHF and Crossfire! - even between FrSky and Crossfire):
  FrSky 2.4ghz   20ms
  TBS Crossfire  12ms
ezUHF              40ms  (but there is a lower latency mode I have to test yet!)

Latency testing method:
Better to probe the video cable (from CAM) directly, or measure the effect of the LED on the screen with a photo diode?
I decided to go back to the screen/photodiode method, because this is what you call "glass to glass" latency - the practical application for the enduser.
Additional benefit: This method allows us to compare digital and analog systems' latencies (since measuring video cable directly only works for analog).

Update 4/2018: in my last Video (Sparrow micro 2) I've come back to also testing cams "direct" with the video cable method. Newer cams can be tested for lantency very accurate now. Something has changed: on the video "curve" I see the light change immediatley - and not in "frame level accuracy". This takes away the 16-20ms inaccuracy. I saw that new cams like Foxeer Predator or Runcam Sparrow 2 have 1.3ms!!!

These are sketches of the two test methods (to maybe understand them easier):

see my video here for some closeups and details about the 2 test methods (starts around 03:00):

Also check "Drone Mesh" - he did quite similar testing here:

Foxeer Predator - the BEST FPV CAM out there? (Sparrow, Eagle2pro)

Please 👍 thanks ;-) (it helps my videos a lot!)
I've tested many cams, currently this is the best! Amazing WDR and lowest latency I measured til now. 1.8mm works well for me - but you need a large FOV on your goggles for such wide lenses!
If you like to have more options in your CAM - be able to switch between 4:3 to 16:9 or pal/ntsc - then go with the Eagle2pro. It has really good image as well and also a low latency.

SJCam SJ7 Star - true 4K! compared with Yi4k and Foxeer Legend 3

Product Link (+TECH Details!):   ►PLEASE SUBSCRIBE
►lots of sample pics

My thoughts / findings:
==================
+ Dimensions match Gopro3/4
+ high buildquality (alu frame)
+- touchscreen nice, but handling not as responsive as smartphone (or Yi4k)
+ touchscreen AND buttons
- charge LED not very visible
- charge with USB MINI (like Gopro3/4) USB micro would be more common?
- scaling down of fast FPS looks terrible
- medium and narrow FOV on 4k makes no sense! should be left out since it produces ugly quality...

Yi4k: lesser distortion, looks "nicer" to the eye - but in 100% crops the image looks less detailed than on the other two cams!
Legend3 has more wideangle than SJ7star, else similar sharpness and details, but "vignetting" on the edges. FL3 has NO! purple fringing!
If you dont have to zoom in (for example film in 4k and then take a 1080p crop) the Yi4k still looks better.
Zooming around in a 4k timelaps on the SJ7star is really nice - lots of details and reserves to zoom...

Batterytime comparison (all 4k 25fps):
Yi4k: 93min
SJ7:  65min
FL3:  53min

Foxeer Legend3 TVOUT and Latency compared to Runcam2 and 3

You wanted to know how the legend 3 looks if used as FPV cam (tv out). I installed it on my new FPV plane (MiniTalon) but before this I tested the latency against Runcam2 and 3.
While the latency of the Legend3 isnt legendary, the imagequality IS! The stabilizer didnt work great for me - better leave it turned off if you use the liveout.
DONT use the cam WITHOUT battery (if you power it from your plane). While this will save some weight, it can lead to disaster!

Jump into the area of interest for you with these jumpmarks (clickable on youtube!):
