FPV Meet 2/23: more Fixedwing fun on the field!

This was a quite spontaneous meeting but a lot of fun was head (as you see and hear).

Sorry that the audio commentary I now capture as a default with my Zoom H2n mic (awesome device). But as native german speakers we cannot just pretend to speak english all the time.

Hope some of the atmosphere even translates without speaking any german ;)

GIANT RC Red Bull Cobra is back - and I got to chase it with my drone!

This was our annual "Sturmfliegen" which translates to "stormflying" because we have more wind in autumn and it's the time where they drink Sturm (some sort of early wine). I got to film and chase a lot of cool RC - including: - the ever impressive RedBull Cobra from Sepp Schmirl (check my Cobra playlist - linked below) - Sebart Avanti XS JET (which is soooo stable and smooth in the air https://bit.ly/3CSjGhY - FPV Wing chase fun with the maidener and his Dolphin (RIP) - a yellow copter which I didn't interview (it was just so chaotic there) - Multiplex Rockstar Biplane (where I could get really close) I used my iFlight Chimera 7 with Gopro10 for the big Cobra and Jet chases, where I almost killed my 4000mah 6S pack while trying to keep up with the jet ;) And the iFlight Titan DC5 to "dance" with that biplane. How do you like the video quality showing the biplane in the air? To fly with the Maidener and his Dolphin I used my new INAV controlled FPV900 wing. Video about this and similar will be up next!

Can you PERCH a Wing? (should you?)

Supposed to be a fun FPV meet at our local flightfield. Turned out to be a lot of fun (but not equally distributed for all pilots ;) Once again I used the TitanDC5 here with the Peanut. Not because it's the best cam I have - but it's good enough for these kinds of videos and it's cheap enough to crash it!

30 sec into the flight something awesome happend!

This is a recent flight (unusual for me to edit my footage so "fresh"). Wanted to test the Caddx Peanut more. Before these flights I had more jello, tried to make a video to show the influence of props - but it was inconsistent. Generally I use 5" copters with new props and ND16 filter on the caddx all the time - that gives the best results. The low weight of the cam is nice, and quality more than sufficient - what do you think? Here I opted NOT to stabilize the peanut footage, because this way I have the full 2880x2880 fisheye raw video - here you can crop and zoom in post and be flexible (to look up or down if neccesary). As I said in the video: this one inconsistency with the power button on the Peanut should be changed: if on it's own battery: power button pressed once means: turn on and rec if on external power: power button once = turn one, another press needed to stat recording

Peanut footage: I decided NOT to use insta-Studio for stabilization but leave it raw, just cropping in the center (from 2800x2800 raw video you can crop 2560x1440 nicely. Very relaxing morning exploration flight!

A sub 250gr drone (GepRC Smart35) is allowed to fly almost everywhere! With this freedom I had a few really good flights on this morning (early summer), and since I used the instaSMO4k I got decent footage out of it:

I use 2.7k 30fps for 2 reasons: 1. my instaSMO4k shuts down mid-flight often when in 4k mode 2. youtube dedicates a good ammount of MBit for 1440p30 videos - and they are sufficient high res imho 2.7k60fps would crop in too much (limitation of camera) 30fps in combination with an ND filter works really nice for cinematic stuff. 4:3 raw resolution is great for stabilization (which in my case works directly thru the insta360 studio premiere plugin). FAKE SUPERVIEW tips: Premiere Settings for 4:3 to 16:9 "fake superview": source video: scale of 50% Adjustment layer: Effect "transform 4:3": scale 143% Effect "Lens distortion removal - gopro - hero 4 session - 1080 superview" Curvature: -46 (play around with this)

DJIFPV Summer Riverruns (scary as s.... to fly that close and fast over water)

Found the confidence to fly more over our river "Schwarza" (Black river) on 5 different spots around here. Of course you need to powerloop that bridges - but throttle response should be trained to catch the copter before it's his last DIVE ;)

Didnt fly the Mavic as often as I should have this year! Such a great device to capture the moment. Be airborne in minutes, capture steady footage that looks good. All the drone paranoia makes enjoying the hobby a bit difficult sometimes...

Mojo & the Golden Hour Mist

Sunsets are around 4pm here now, and foggy conditions in Nov make it hard to fly at all. So for a friday after work session I had to find a new spot, high enough to escape the fog. It's awesom if you can "bring home" this kind of footage with no issues. Once again enjoying the new Vortex and the reliable Crossfire.

eFlite Rare Bear FPV

It started like this: as the only FPVer on the field I always end up chasing planes with my quads. I wanted to do some more LOS flying (line of sight, normal RC stuff...).
So I re-activated my eFlite "Rare Bear" racer plane (they really like this plane on the field!). After the first flight session I thought to myself: "what if I mount a runcam3 on it, and use TV out to my VTX? The installation was quick and easy, works nice. Just have to get the plane flying smoother in higher winds to enjoy it more... (maybe I have to install a stabilizer?)

Nice spot right outside of work, own parking lot AND dedicated powerloop gate wich is also a scenic picture frame :-)

The flights in sunny conditions wer BEFORE I tuned this quad better (using the tips from Joshua Bardwell regarding PID Filters).
The Evening flights at home were just to try the quad out - less wind here as well - but very smooth after PID filter tuning.

Batteries tested:
Like the Turnigy Nanotech 850mah 4cell the most,
Graphene 750mah 4cell is ok as well
Graphene 500mah is acro - but too short flighttime
Turnigy Bolt is not good!
1min you feel some extra punch - but then it's even worse then the Nanotech 850!

Foxeer Legend2 - is a nice option as HD cam here - but the quality should be better in 1080p. Weight of 45gr is ok for this little quad - but of cours it "feels" more sporty and lighter, more acrobatic without the payload. But where's the fun if I cant show it in HD here? :)

DJI Mavic Pro - more stunning 4k Demo Footage

More stunning demo footage from my new favourite "always in the backpack" drone. Yes, I did COLOR GRADE most scenes to get nicer color / saturation / temperature. Also did increase the speed on some shots (it's better to fly slow and smooth and speed it up in post later).

Thanks to a tip of a commenter I discovered "proxy editing" in Sony Vegas 13. It's just an option to be turned on. What it does: recode all 4k clips you use for preview - so you can edit and preview SMOOTH, for rendering the final video it takes the 4k raw files of course. This way you can cut 4k footage even on older PCs.

I didnt know how awesome the light / fog scenery would be when I started (actually I just wanted to test fly the Mavic more since it had some lost connections on my last flight). Turned out so nice that I had to post this instantly!

DJI Mavic - best Aerial Video shots I've captured so far!

I ordered my DJI Mavic from http://Globe-Flight.de (buy it there to support this great shop!). Got it early Nov and wanted to take my time with it and do nice and smooth shots. I was surprised how easy this is with this tiny, foldable 4k drone.

Guess the Gear (of this nice sunset flights)

Really nice, relaxing evening flight into the sunset. This time I let you guess which copter(s) I've used here, and which cams. Guess it in the comments but - SPOILER ALERT - the stuff is revealed at the end (shortly after I land).  ►SUBSCRIBE
This was all within one hour or so on my standard flightgrounds which is not too far to drive after work (sunlight is getting rare already here!).

FPV Guests and DIVE FAIL, commented Miniquad chasing

Friends from Denmark made a stop in my region to meet for some FPV flying. They are so nice - and danish "flødebolle" are very tasty, that's what I can say now!
Lars is racing member from danish team "Get out" (apparently they had to leave a lot of places, parking lots they wanted to fly...).

ProxSCHIMity - fast and low through awesome scenery, treesurfing

The kind of flying that I love the most. Gives you the "flying like a bird" feeling the best if you fly close over/under the trees. Found an awesome new spot with a huge field enclosed with some nice trees and a forrest surrounding it. Also flew on my "Eichberg" a lot and found some new lines there as well.

So flieg ich am liebsten, "wie ein Vogel" knapp über Bäume oder darunter durch wenn Platz ist...
Hab in der Nähe ein tolles Feld gefunden, welches perfekt ist für diese Art des Fliegens. Hoffe es gefällt Euch!

Vortex 250 - natural racer - una festa sui prati!

Hier hab ich einen wirklich tollen Platz gefunden (neuer Spot auf dem "Hügel" wo ich schon sehr oft geflogen bin). War einfach eine tolle Flugsesson nach der Arbeit. Der Übergang von Blätterlosen Bäumen zu frühsommerlichem "Vollgrün" der Landschaft ist beeindruckend find ich!
Ja und zuletzt hab ich gemerkt, dass mich droneracing auf Kursen gegen die Uhr (oder andere Racer) nicht so interessiert wie einfach einem natürlichen (imaginären) Kurs in so schöner Natur zu folgen :)
Das Lied wollte ich auch schon lange mal verwenden - jetzt hat's endlich gepasst!

This session was only a few days ago. It was so great to fly there I had to share it asap. Been flying on this hill (Eichberg) hundrets of times - but flew on this slope with lush greens for the first time. Flew there a few days after trying to fly on a race. Found out that I'm not the 2min race guy. I prefer to find "natural race tracks" with cool obstacles to fly thru...
Had this song in mind now for a while and think it works nice here (it's italian and means - a party on the lawns).
