AtomRC DolphinPro Review, flights, chase shots

AtomRC asked me to test the DolphinPro - which was an instant "YES" for me - since I love the previous Dolphin! The new one comes with many improvments - here you see all the details - and I took my time to properly testfly it, give you some INAV insights, mods, and STL files.

SPECS / INFO:
Wingspan: 800mm
Length: 862mm
WingArea: 16.96d㎡
Material: EPP
Motor recommend: 2807 1100KV
ESC: ≥6S 50A BEC
Propeller: 8040-2

WEIGHT:  959g (all except battery)

FLIGHTTIME: 21 min cruising around = 2110 mah (2x 1300mah 6S Lipos)
  so 15-20 mins on 2600mah 6S
  ~25-35 mins on a 5000mah 6S LiIon

BATTERY OPTIONS
2x 1300mah 6S Lipo - far back
1x 1300mah 6S Lipo - all the way fwd
1x 5000mah 6S LiIon pack

GPS altough it's just an BN220 and not a modern M10 - acquisation was quick and sats were plenty

Wingspan a bit shorter than old one, denser foam (at least the grey version),
VTails larger, further in the back,
VTail + Ailerons - plenty options! (spoilerons for landing?, Speedbrake?)
Wingfences - instead of downward facing wingtips (which broke easily)
Control rods "beefier" not the bendy wires
LEDs installed
Nose: different options, magnets + screws - no glue needed
Wire channel below battery for nice Video cable install!

TIPS:
SECURE the LIDs (front one comes with a screw - use it!)
Back LID flew away in a highspeed test (140kph)
Use this "AtomRC Canopy locking arm (verschluss nupsi).stl" and a little bowden tube glued into fuselage with a screw.
I use INAV:  7.1.1 (at the moment)
To have correct MAH readings in your OSD (if you use their AtomRC FC) you can set this SCALE (I've calibrated it and it looks accurate now):
set current_meter_scale = 170

Autolaunch settings:
set nav_fw_launch_max_angle = 90
set nav_fw_launch_motor_delay = 200
set nav_fw_launch_climb_angle = 18
set nav_fw_launch_timeout = 10000
set nav_fw_launch_max_altitude = 0
set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1750
set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1300

Flew fixedwing FPV for 4 month now - this is what I captured!

I fly FPV since 2008 and it started with a plane back then (MPX Twinstar).
Soon I moved to flying quads - because they are easier to fly, less effected by wind, smaller...
But each year I have my "phase" of wanting to fly with PLANEs. Usually this phase don't last long, since I fall back to the convenience of copters :)
Now with really good options (DJI video transmission, Crossfire controll link and INAV flight controller) this was my longest phase of mostly flying planes!
I've learned a lot with the planes, feel really confident with INAV now. Autolaunch installed on all of the planes - super helpfull! Stability (control surface action against gusts?)  could be better - I guess I need to tune the PIDs there better.
But ACRO mode is so nice! The plane automatically flies straight, without the need for trimming the servos ;)

Stats
this video contains 81GB of footage from July 12 till Oct 28
ARWing pro: 13 flights, 4h 18mins
FPV900: 23 flights, 4h 15mins
Mars 1200: 10 flights, 3h 28mins

Each of these planes has some advantages.
ArWing pro:     review: https://youtu.be/Z4JeN7U_KDw
+ efficient  (kind of), can carry a gopro (needs lot of nose weight, so without a gopro you need DEADWEIGHT)
- it's a bit unstable and wobbly still.
- Launches are not always easy (but with INAV and autolaunch it's easy!)

FPV900:  easy, small wing now with INAV and GPS!
+ it's cheap so the risk is lower - more confidence!
+ works nice with 3000mah LiIon   - or 1800mah Lipos for stunts!
- a bit unstable in high speeds
- noisy motor / Prop combo

MARS 1200:
my biggest, most grown up FPV longrange plane!
+ A LOT of space, good speed and efficiency
+ super video range (also thanks to the TrueRC singularity 12cm antennas )
- Stalls are ugly, landings not always easy

ARWing Pro (not just another review :-)

Here you find HONEST reviews and opinions! If you wanna support this idea please check my PATREON: https://bit.ly/2ESMtIO or consider an EPIDEMIC account for great music (link below). Superthanks is also an option (just sayin :) but youtube gets a good chunk of it! This is NOT an affiliate link: https://bit.ly/3PHIIEG (I dont care if you purchase this, but I like the wing!) ►Tips for the plane: CG 85mm (Stall test: do it in ALT!!! it spirals and you loose ~30m) easier handlaunches with slightly REAR CG? but better (more stable) flight with slightly FWD CG. Or just stick with the stock 85mm! 3300mah Lipo (346gr): 136gr in nose 7000mah LiIon (409gr) + Gopro7: 25gr in the back set motorbrake to MAX: start ESC with FULL THROTTLE (without prop) wait for music, then first beep (brake) go MIN THR. and MAX THR again here wait for 4 beeps (max brake) and again confirm with min/max thr. PNP Setup is good - 8x5 Prop - dont change it to an folding prop, use motor brake setting for less chance of breaking your prop on landing Elevons: 2-3mm up from the wingroot (reflex) if the CG is at stock 85mm maybe a slight bit more for maiden launch to help you! ►Inav 5 for Matek f411 wse: Target: MATEKF411SE_FD_SFTSRL1 S1: Motor S3: Left Servo S4: Right Servo UART1: GPS UART2: CRSF SoftSerial1: DJI OSD (RX=LED, TX=ST1) ►►iNav CLI important setting: set init_gyro_cal=OFF (There seems to be a bug in iNav 5 where the initial calibration after booting causes sa write operation. if you unplug it too soon, this could reset your FC to defaults?) Motor Beeps but doesnt work? motor beeps slowly: no signal (or motor outputs are disabled in iNav!) if it beeps quickly (if activated), this means throttle is not at 0% - ESC needs calibration (not via remote, but via the Motor slider in iNav config) iNav flightmodes: NAV CRUISE (course hold + alt hold) ACRO (if nothing is selected!) RATE mode - helps against the WIND! MANUAL (Passthru) RTH Settings: nav_rth_climb_first = ON Maximum altitude since launch (NAV_RTH_MAX_ALT) Autotune flight Fly a few rounds with enough ROLL and PITCH movements. DON'T Start with AUTOTUNE mode activated (I nearly crashed because of this!) Important: after landing, DISARM, then move both Sticks BACK and OUT to SAVE! ●▬▬▬LINKS▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●  @b14ckyy's Tech  wing launch tutorial! https://youtu.be/m9AgBgys2PA  @Painless360  Softserial on Matek F411 tutorial: https://youtu.be/7TM9wGU41vo  @Olivier C  great Fixedwing FPV Channel like: https://youtu.be/yMNENYcR2NI

A4 Skyhawk - Maidenflight...

...fun day at the field (except for 2 ;)
also: see how Hulk Hogan lost his Easystar... Really happy with the drone footage quality - what do you think? I finally started using the InstaSMO4k (but in 2.7k30 4:3 mode). Stabilization is super smooth!

FMS Ranger 1800 (Cessna 172) - underrated! forgotten? Awesome!

Instead of yet another drone. here I chose a Plane from Banggood (they supplied this review sample). Very appealing for me: almost all is finished out of the box, you just have to complete it in a few easy steps (shown in the video). Big plane with very easy-to-fly handling but also well capable of some mild acrobatics! Just looks good in the air!
PRODUCT Link: https://ban.ggood.vip/Y5Kp (code: BGRangerCZ, 10%off)

●▬▬▬Features/Findings▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● ►REFLEX stabilization: Easy to setup (3pos switch). Would fly in "optimised mode" (this holds the angle of the plane against wind/gust but will not auto-level when you let go the sticks. Auto level is too much imho - not needed - only maybe if you learn to fly? ►FLAPS: powerfull! mix in some down elevator! (from 10mm up and down in low rates, I'd use 3-4mm downtrim!) use a bit more throttle with flaps fully deployed - else it will stall or fly backwards ;) Good for taking the speed out on steep landing approaches - but not as easy to handle as I thought (but maybe that's just lack of LOS flying training on my side). ►LANDING GEAR: great! Big enough for our green field, dampened NOSEgear for sub-optimal landings (you should "flare" the plane and set it on the main wheels first and then lower the throttle to set the nosegear gently down. NOSEGEAR: really needs some threadlock ;) Also it can take a lot of impact on hard landings - but the spring will send you back in the air ;) ►Lights! (my first plane with scale like LEDs installed (even a front landing light, and red/green blinky lights on wingtips). ►FLIGHTTIME with 5200mah 4S (10c multistar pack, 433gr 6yrs old packs!). ~7.5mins and 60% left in pack - so easy 10mins or more (will also try a 7000mah ZOHD liIon pack for ~20mins?) ►TRANSPORT: quite a large plane, wings are installed quite easy and quick with the 4 screws and R-clips on struts. Elevator/Rudder could also be uninstalled for transport - but then it gets to be a bit cumbersome...

Fixedwing dives and cloudsurfing at the same time!

These were some "once in a lifetime" conditions! Not too much winds, enough time and FPV gear working flawless (almost). Had a cloudbase just above the ridge of my favourite wall so I could cloudsurf and mountaindive at the same time. FPV doesnt get much better than this I think!

TechOne FPV900: great FAST WING (Review, Maidenflight, FPV, Speedtest and CRASH)

get it at Banggood

After I found my passion for FIXEDWING FPV again this summer, I wanted sommething faster and more stable than the S800 Wing. Here I like the easy build and the center-section concept (even if it's copied from someone else...).
You have plenty of space and possibilities on this wing, the HD Cam is mounted vibration-free (but it's a tight fit - for larger cams you need to saw off the side carbon parts there).
The FPV Cam is mounted quite safe down there.

The flight footage here was partly stabilized in post - since I dont like all too shakey footage. I only use light stabilization - but if it's not dead calm, such a wing will shake. It will also shake under full throttle :)

MiniTalon: from Maidencrash to epic FPV Adventure

Here in this video you'll see my experience over the last 2 weeks:
from maidencrash, luckily I announced it that way before launch so nobody was surprised, to successfull FPV mission!
I got this kit for around 50$ (banggood) LAST YEAR after the flights with my XUAV One  (the one with the folding prop AROUND it's tail-rod). The One was just not a good flyer, gears around this pusher are weak...
Then I read only good things about this easy, proper flying Mini Talon. It's a shame that I didnt build this earlier! Had to put aside my quads a little for this :)

►Main features:
- BIG SPACE for things like Autopilot and FPV equipment
- good speedrange (~35 to 140kph)
- easy build (really easy)
- long flighttimes (you can use 5.000 to 10.000mah 4cells) I get really safe 25mins or 20km travel with around 3.000mah used

►►►Important tips (also seen in video):
- CG is 55mm from leading edge of wing (not 76mm like manual says!)
- throw it horizontally not at an up-angle, give it a nice toss, dont use full throttle (torque left!), check this video guide to see how it's launched
- secure the main battery (it WILL affect your CG if it can "roam around" in your fuselage :)
- create some motor air vents in the back - my motor got really hot (ok it's summer here)

FOXEER Legend 3:  TVOUT warning
ATTENTION: DO NOT ONLY POWER IT FROM EXTERNAL SOURCE - with small variations in current the cam will reboot, a fat screen will ask for movie recovery - TVOUT is blocked!
With it's battery in I had 4 long flights now without issue - cam is always charged. Maybe I will move on to dedicated FPV cam...

Fixedwing Dives in the mountains! (S800 Sky Shadow)

Perfect (almost) FPV morning! Had 4 flights and 4 controlled landings - what more can you expect? :)
Going up that peak was scary - diving it down (the goal for this morning) even more so. But very rewarding. The relaxing proximity flying over the trees was good to "come down" a bit. Hope you like it!

(I know it's shakey - this wing is probbably too small, I used some stabilization in post - but not too much to avoid that weird effect)

S800 sky shadow - or HOW I FELL FOR WINGS AGAIN...

After my review of this Wing I only did a maidenflight and got back to quadcopters soon. They are easier...
But now I wanted more flighttime, range and some of that FPV adventures I had back when I flew FPV planes.
I changed most electronics in this kit.
So if you're interested: get the foamparts only (50$) at banggood and forget this stabilizer, or the cheap cam/VTX they sell in the full kit. The motor seems ok, the ESC is terrible as well...

After these flights here I even installed my Arkbird Autopilot/OSD for more advanced missions - but that's another story (to be seen here soon). I also did some amazing dives with it - stay tuned!

eFlite Rare Bear FPV

It started like this: as the only FPVer on the field I always end up chasing planes with my quads. I wanted to do some more LOS flying (line of sight, normal RC stuff...).
So I re-activated my eFlite "Rare Bear" racer plane (they really like this plane on the field!). After the first flight session I thought to myself: "what if I mount a runcam3 on it, and use TV out to my VTX? The installation was quick and easy, works nice. Just have to get the plane flying smoother in higher winds to enjoy it more... (maybe I have to install a stabilizer?)

Arkbird OSD and Autopilot on the new FPV Plane "XUav ONE"

See this nice plane in my hangar, a few build tips and closeups. Find lots of infos in description!
X-AUV One plane
Arkbird OSD/AP

►Infos
Buildlog from the MFM Material version with some good tips
another Buildlog from SchumiXD of the EPO Version (the same as what I'm testing)
useful RCGruops Thread

Buildlog:
hotglue the servos
glued vtail foam into plastic parts and carbon rod with hotglue
screw on the V-tail fins (secure servoconnectors with tape inside the tail-boom!)
mounted the 3536 1800kv turnigy motor (was easy fit there)
add grease into gearbox (crane grease)
used 60amp Turnigy plush ESC - plenty of space - ESC cables routed outside through air flow
add linkage to servoarms
currently use 5channels directly on radio, later add autopilot

first tries with fixed styrofoam nose - later installing FPV cam on 2axis gimbal (to look around)
(roll axis? to stabilized image - but this is useless with servos - one would need a brusless gimbal - so roll servo is useless IMHO)

CG: to achieve proper CG (around 75mm from LE) I had to move the battery (5200mah 4cell 433gr) all the way forward, did even carve out some more foam from the nose itself - so battery sticks a few cm in the nose). Also added some dead weight directly in the nose ~ 100gr) and the Runcam2 ontop the nose.

Worlds Largest RC Triplane - Fokker Dr1 "Red Baron" (Giant scale RC from Gernot Bruckmann) | RCSchim

I was at the RC-Fair in Wels (one of the biggest in Austria). They had a great air-show - here's the first part - the FOKKER Dr-1.
Gaylord Fokker :) No - it's the red baron, a WW1 triplane - never seen one so close and so realistic looking! Great flying from Gernot Bruckmann (great RC champion) who not only flies this in slow scale circles and 8ths - but also does some cool acrobatic tricks with this huge, expensive model. What a sight!

ImmersionRC 12km Longrange Zephyr II flight, Hover82

My friend asked me for a good location to do a longrange flight - so we started up this hill. He flew only over unpopulated area, uses RUBY autopilot, a great videolink (incl IBCracy Pepperbox antenna!) and a very stable EzUHF JR Module in the new Taranis. The whole flight was without a glitch, only on LOW POWER mode of EzUHF and it was really high humidity (short after the flight it rained). So this 12km show the littel and cheap JR module doesn't stand behind it's bigger brother (the EzUHF Box)!
The kids also loved my public viewing screen and we had to keep them from crowding us in and maybe tear out a cable or so ;-)

Albatros L39 (Black Horse) - largest Jet on our field!!!

Franz showed us proudly his really great new Jet. He is one of the first in Austria to call such a big bird his own.
The fact that the position lights are installed on the wrong sides is most probably not noticeable for normal viewers. The somewhat unsuccessful landing is just scratching a little on the pilots ego ;-)

Multiplex Easystar 2 - most simlpe FPV plane - Setup Tips, many flights, chase of other planes

Last year I had a few FPV meetings. All the time I did regret to just have the Quad with me. With a Quad you just can't keep up with the speed and flighttimes of simple planes.
So now I prepared my Easystar 2 to be the most simple FPV plane you can imagine. No fancy stuff (like OSD, GPS....) just attach the wings, throw in a battery (one flight battery 2200mah 3cell for plane and FPV stuff) and fly. Flighttimes greater than 10mins with 2200mah is pretty good!
Horyzon V3 even starts the recording for you if it gets power! The small cam has only little air drag, little additional weight to the plane - so the flight characteristics of the plane stay almost the same.
As I show in the video the Plane has some downsides vs Quad also: if you have some wind, you will see it on the video. I flew in high winds- no problem - it just doesnt look good!
