FPV Meet Shenenigangs, Fixedwing formation, Car bashing in the woods (Jan,Feb 25)

RC / FPV Friends and I met a few times in Jan/Feb and these are the highlights.  Thanks for all the pilots - those FPV action sessions were great! 

Airdrift and Action on the flightfield: Angry Cyclist, Crash of Phantom F4, burning Lipo, Albatross

This is quite a mix here! First few mins from the "Airdrift" weekend at a large RC shop in styria (http://Der-Schweighofer.at). I could take a closer look at the DJI Inspire1 and the Phantom3 there, saw RC Car jumping action and an extraordinary 3d Heli performance (unreal!).
2nd and 3rd part are on our local flightfield. Flying there with my MiniQuad and later th Xugong2. Many electric Jets (some of them land, others don't ;-)
A "search and rescure" flight with my Xugong to the smoking Lipo of the Phantom F4 Jet and an angry bicycler that wouldn't like my drone at first, then I showed him FPV and he was amazed!

Da es zu kalt zum Fliegen ist, waren wir Eislaufen. Damit trotzdem was für den Blog dabei rausspringt (und weils auch ein klein wenig Spaß gemacht hat) durfte uns auch der eSavage begleiten. Leider reichte die Zeit nicht, um Spikes zu basteln - dann wäre er sicher etwas schneller auf dem Eis gewesen :-) Ausserdem sind die alten Nimh Akkus auch nicht mehr besonders frisch...
Die letzten GoPro Aufnahmen entstanden dann auf einem Holzstück - welches der Savage mittels Schleppleine nachgezogen hat - das Ergebnis taugt mir:



Since it's too sub zero to fly I took my eSavage with me when we went skating. Spikes would have been a nice option - but drifting was fun also. The performance could be better - the batteries show their age now...
The last few GoPro shots where taken from a wood piece which was attached on a string - like a sled. I like the outcome!

eSavage Car FPV

Diesmal zeig ich Euch FPV mal aus der Perspektive des eSavage. Die Idee war, meine FPV Ausrüstung mal in Ruhe auf Reichweite zu testen. Im schlechtesten Fall (Bodennähe) sieht man so, wie lange es dauert, bis Video oder Steuerung versagen. Beim Auto kann man das viel gefahrloser testen, als mit dem Heli! Bei ca. 440m bin ich an die Grenzen gestoßen, hier waren aber auch ein paar Büsche im Weg. Wahrscheinlich wäre noch etwas mehr drinne gewesen, aber die Störungen werden ab hier zu gefährlich zumindest für's Fliegen.
In die andere Richtung war schon bei 200m Schluß - hier gab es noch mehr Hindernisse und hohes Gras.
Im zweiten Teil dieses Videos wird man sehen, wie weit man kommt, wenn ein Gebäude im Weg ist (und mann in eine Lagerhalle fährt...)

This time I wanted to show my car based FPV fun. It came from the idea, that this way I would be able to test the video and control range of my system. I could even go behind buildings and see how far the signal goes. If it fails - a car won't crash - it just stops where it is.
So in part 1 here on my flightfield I tried how far I would come till the video is too bad to see something. After 442m on the ground with some bushes in the way I had enough interference to stop there. Maybe another 100m would be possible - but only with car - with an heli longer blackouts are deadly ;-)

The other direction around I came to only 200m - here the way made a bend around a wood and more green and stuff was blocking the signal.

eSavage on a dustroad

The opportunity of haveing a dustroad in our backyard I had to let the little savage play on his nativ road-surface. Boy had he fun :-)

Als sich die Gelegenheit einer Schotterstraße in unserem Hof ergab musste ich den kleinen Savage zum Spielen raus lassen. Und er hatte ordentlich Spaß :-)

Blackstork OSD Tests on eSavage

This was my first test of the new Blackstork OSD:

- GPS fix was aquired quite fast (under 1min)

- speedometer worked good for a small car, running down a longer straight would have been a better test tough

- home position indicator also worked good - even in this rather small testing area - when flying FPV GPS surely has an easier job because the distances are greater

- OSD gets a little hot - no problem
(I think this is because of voltage regulator from 12v to 5v for GPS)


I learned from two errors in this test:

1.) while setting up the OSD I wasted most of the videobattery - during the test the battery got empty - picture gone - blind - this shouldn't happen in the air!!!
One has to keep an eye on the videobattery voltage!

2.) a new pan-servo now moves 180deg. - this is great - but you have to secure the cable with some tape - after panning the cam the cable unplugged - again - this would't be nice in the air!!

e-Savage FPV Edition

Due to bad flying conditions I took some FPV training on wheels :-)



Because I had no limitation on size and weight I was able to use a big servo for camera pan. I found it best to set up a mix on my transmitter that moves the cam 50% in the direction of the steering - so the FPV truck looks "into" the curve.

Mein aktueller eSavage hat (schon vor längerer Zeit) eine neue Karrosserie spendiert bekommen. Ausserdem wurden noch die Stoßdämpfer gegen Tuningteile getauscht:
