It's always great to experience this one of a kind RC copter in person. Each time I try my best to cover these impressions with my gear (this time better camera and mics). What I still cannot capture: the smell of kerosine - smells just like the fullszie version of this copter!
Pilot: Josef Schmirl
Technical Data: (of this newly built RED BULL Cobra) 18 servos for various functions (moving radar, gatling gun, opens doors, drinks redbull of course, stick movements, dropping, flares, smoker) Turbine: Jakadofsky 10kw Weight: 37kg Flying time: 5mins
Our annual "Sturmfliegen" wouldn't be as awesome as it is every year without our special guest - Sepp Schmirl - piloting his amazing RedBull Cobra like the pro he is. You rarely see such a level of confidece and experience combined in such an humble rc pilot!
And once again: this video can't transport one important aspect of the impressive show: the smell of cerosine ;)
This was our annual "Sturmfliegen" which translates to "stormflying" because we have more wind in autumn and it's the time where they drink Sturm (some sort of early wine).
I got to film and chase a lot of cool RC - including:
- the ever impressive RedBull Cobra from Sepp Schmirl (check my Cobra playlist - linked below)
- Sebart Avanti XS JET (which is soooo stable and smooth in the air https://bit.ly/3CSjGhY
- FPV Wing chase fun with the maidener and his Dolphin (RIP)
- a yellow copter which I didn't interview (it was just so chaotic there)
- Multiplex Rockstar Biplane (where I could get really close)
I used my iFlight Chimera 7 with Gopro10 for the big Cobra and Jet chases, where I almost killed my 4000mah 6S pack while trying to keep up with the jet ;)
And the iFlight Titan DC5 to "dance" with that biplane. How do you like the video quality showing the biplane in the air?
To fly with the Maidener and his Dolphin I used my new INAV controlled FPV900 wing. Video about this and similar will be up next!

April 2016

See two giant RC Helis, the BO-105 electric doing scale stunts (rolls!) and the great Cobra which is turbine powered. Both around 40kg!!!
I have many videos online of the impressive, long time largest RC Heli (except military) the Red Bull Cobra AH-1 from Sepp Schmirl. Now I've seen him flying this great RC Heli once again with a friend. It was a unique sight to see two Red Bull themed copters, one electric and the other turbine powered. Both very impressive machines!
Was cool to see scale stunts from the BO-105 like the real sized model (it can also perform rolls and loops flying for the "flying bulls" or as seen in the opening sequence of James Bond - Spectre).

During my flights with the Chroma I could test most of the functions (hopefully).
Summit: Flight performance great, RTH+follow mode work also great, Wifi Link and cam performance are average. Wifi: 500m are reachable, please check if the cam quality is ok for you - if not consider the Gopro Gimbal version or the CGo3 (4k).

10:13 wifi video link (Quality, issues)
13:34 Low battery behaviour

Follow or Tracking mode:
you have to enable it ON THE GROUND for it to work; as soon as you're in the air it will follow/track you if you go into smart mode
Test return home:
RTH flies to your current (radio) position and lands around 5m infront of you
RTH flies at about 13km/h and descends pretty fast on landing approach to land very smooth (good autolanding!)
Low Battery behaviour:
vibration alert on radio at 10.6v and the max alt is reduced to 60m - LEDs are blinking RED
initiating autoland (whereever it is at this moment - NOT RTH!)
if you're getting below 10.4vs
I had little over 1min from first alert to autoland.
so if you're out far and you get the first alert - try to fly a safe route home - a route where it can land safely if it chooses to (no water, trees etc.)
Flighttimes:
28.11.: Flighttime 24min, 500mASL and mostly hovering, did autoland on 10.5v
3.12.: warm battery; 10 degree C sunny, no wind, 700m ASL: 19mins (50% hover 50% flying around medium fast, not much climbing - I was around 50m once)
Cam quality below Gopro3, a bit oversharpened, pixelated
Bitrate: 30mbit on 1080p50fps
Nice portability - easy to pack in a sleek backpack landing gear easy detachable cam with quickrelease and only one plug (looks like the wifi happens directly in the cam)
GPS tower foldable
Status leds:
Motor POD LEDs are very bright
RED blinking means LOW Batt! - return imediatly or it will autoland soon where it is!
purple LEDs indicate the "angle" Mode (which I normally flew it in)
Remote:
well built, all switches labled and logically placed;
gimbal tilt slider on one side, speed slider on the other
Built in touch display with suction cup mounted sunshade - computer is android based
video transmission is 5.8ghz wifi, latency notable (400ms)
- suctioncup mounted sunhood doesnt stick too well (mod it with velcros might be a good idea)
- position of screen is not ideal, screen ABOVE joysticks is better
Props are similar to Phantom - selftightening
10" Props - very silent - efficient
Motor: 3508 780kv. blh8611
Battery: 3cell 6300mah
important TIP: get the bl8624 adaptor to charge on your normal charger to have it recharged faster and with more control over how much juice was put in
25-30mins Flighttime at 0m ASL in warm temps
We had Michal Palus (one of the best RC Heli pilots I saw so far!) as our guest on the local field in Gloggnitz. Amazing what he did with his two machines! He uses 4500mah 56v (14cell) batteries which have to be loaded with an 3000 watts loader (but only for 9mins loading time)!
Sorry english only subbers - I kept my vid german this time. I guess most of the things in the video don't need translation. This is an foldable Quadcopter with AlexMos stabilized brushless gimbal. Gopro is kept straight under most conditions (even quite windy ones) and so it captures stunning movie like footage. Check my hangar for more links and infos.
I was asked to test the new Naza-H stabilizer sytem for "normal" Helis (not my usual Multicopters). So I chose my crash resistant Funcopter as a test platform. To keep a long story short: you can't use the Naza-H on a fixed pitch heli! While it works in manual mode (basicly it only provides you with a gyro for tailrotor) - it doesn't work well in Attitude or even GPS mode. Why? Because to maintain altitude (controlled via the included barometric sensor) the Naza would alter the pitch - and keep constant motor speeds. By now you should guess why this doesn't work on a fixed pitch heli ;-)
So if you have the weird combination of the really easy to fly Funcopter and want to have it hanging in the sky automatically with Naza - forget it - get a "real" Heli instead ;-)
So for the real test of the Naza H you have to wait till we can mount it on my friends TRex 600. Video coming soon!
Yes, this was before I found the awesome GELBLOCK! So this vid has some ammount of jello. Shot in the region of Lower Austria, around a little Village called Bürg / Vöstenhof on 30.12.2012. Who remembers the great intro to "The Shining" where they drove up to that remote hotel and were chased by the cam heli?
Wish you all the best for 2013 and thanks vor visiting here regularly! I cut together the best scenes of 2012 FPV - unfortunately I couldn't decide what to leave away - so it got a bit long. Hope you enjoy it anyways,
Greetings,
RCSchim
Wieder toll geflogen!
Update 5/2014 - after 5 Years I finally got tech data from a bigger heli: LAMA Sa 315B with 3,4m:
On the other hand it only has 5cm more main rotor - but 10kg less the weight...
Maybe we can do a video with both on the same airfield and let the camera decide which one is bigger?
English text: Since there was some amount of discussion on my Video von Sepp Schmirls Red Bull Cobra if it's the biggest RC Heli or not, I tried to do some more research on the net to find a bigger heli. Besides some military or professional grade drones I diddn't find a bigger one. See tech specs in my video. One place with some discussion is this forum with a few candidates.
Kandidaten:
Main Rotor Diameter: 3400 mm (134”)
Total Length: 3110 mm (122”)
Total Height: 1120 mm (44”)
Maximum T/O Weight: 200 kg (440 lbs)
Empty Weight: 110 kg (243 lbs)
Payload Capacity: 50 kg (110 lbs)
Fuel (internal tanks): 57 L (15.5 gal) equal 42 kg (92.5 lbs) AVGas 100 LL
Payload Electrical Power: 500 W @ 28 V DC
Data Link Range: Up to 180 km (97 nm) available
Vario Lama SA315B turbine rc helicopter-Jojo flying
K-Max Out of (my) competition because it isn't an RC Scale heli - but it's impressive anyhow:
And another entry - but it's only close to the Cobra - not bigger (it has 3,2m main rotor diameter):
25.6.13: new entries:
based on the lenght (2,75m) and if it's scale - it's rotor should be around 3,15m
"only" 2,6m Rotor - but I really loved the movie back in the 80s!
This is some creative construction! This front rotor should help if the rear rotor fails shouldn't it? And I also like the powerdrive of this UAV!
Sepp Schmirl was our special guest on the first "Sturmfliegen" on 1.10.2011 from the Gloggnitzer Auflieger group. This is the second video I did of his Cobra - and you can see that he learned much since the first vid in 2009!
The crash was sad to watch - but he managed the emergency very well!
This heli was converted from a gas engine to electric. Now it uses 2x5cell 5000mah batteries (serial - so 10cell 5000) with around 8mins flighttime.
The slowmo was done with Sony Vegas 10 / Twixtor plugin - as a first try.
