TBS Discovery - Highlights of Quad FPV (great views from the last few months!)

Viel Spaß bei dieser Sammlung meiner besten FPV momente der letzten Monate. Ich hab nun schon über 130 Flüge auf diesem Setup und hab wirklich jeden davon genossen! Wenn die Technik immer besser wird, wird's immer einfacher solch großartige Momente einzufangen.

Videotipp: Space Glider - FPV to Space and Back!

David (der Tricopter Erfinder?) aus Schweden hat hier sicher einen der besten FPV Flüge gemacht. Ich hab vor Jahren mal von eine paar Spaniern gelesen die ähnliches vor hatten. Leider gab es nur ein paar Videos von den Vorbereitungen, aber dann wurde das Projekt nicht weiter geführt.
David hat vorher anscheinend nicht viel Wind gemacht, hat sich ein paar Wochen in seinen Bastelkeller verdrückt und dann macht er's einfach.
Das nicht alles wie geplant verlief ist eine andere Geschichte... Hut ab! Für mich war das viel interessanter als Felix 500 mio$ Sprung auf den er jetzt extrem stolz ist...

David (the Tricopter inventor) from sweden did just one of his best FPV flights! Years back I read about a similar project from some spain guys - but I think they never finished this endeavour. David surprised us here after doing some tech stuff in his basement. It wasn't 100% successfull but very entertaining. For me this was much more fun than Felix' 500mio$ project he feels sooo proud of!

Gopro1 and 2 Liveout delay measurements with slowmo cam

Eigentlich wird ja meist davon abgeraten, die Gopro als FPV cam zu verwenden (Akku, Stecker, Lag, UHF Störung,...).
Ich wollte mal selbst sehen, wie viel Verzögerung wirklich durch die Gopro erzeugt wird. Mit der Gopro3 als Slowmo cam sieht man's um 10x verlangsamt recht gut!
GP2: 100ms GP1: 150ms

On my TBS Discovery I have a seperate FPV cam with no delay. And Gopro3 for recording. This is the recommended way to go. But I also wanted to have an easy setup on 2 other multirotors (my old Tricopter and an F450 Flamewheel - both with KK2.0 controller). On the Tricopter I did already some FPV flying using the liveout of Gopro2. It was windy and felt strange - it's simply not dialed in yet. AND: additionally I thought that the often discussed delay from Gopro Liveout might be an issue... So this is why I did these tests.
So Gopro2 is a bit better than the old GP1 - I couldn't yet test GP3 Black because I don't have the new Liveout cable...

TBS Discovery in great Scenery, chasing a car long distance (Bürg, NÖ)

Hier hatte ich meinen Disco am 30.12.12 bei ungewöhnlich mildem, tollen Flugwetter mit im Auto und wir konnten hier spontan an der Landstrasse stehen bleiben und diese schöne Gegend erkunden.
Wer kann sich noch an das Intro von "The Shining" erinnern? Hier wurde auch die Familie im Auto von einem Heli aus verfolgt ;-)
Bei diesem Flug hab ich noch keinen Gelblock verwendet, ein paar Wackler sind also zu finden...

Yes, this was before I found the awesome GELBLOCK! So this vid has some ammount of jello. Shot in the region of Lower Austria, around a little Village called Bürg / Vöstenhof on 30.12.2012.
Who remembers the great intro to "The Shining" where they drove up to that remote hotel and were chased by the cam heli?

Black Hornet

Schaut aus wie ein kleiner Indoo-Heli, aber dürfte unsere FPV Ausrüstung recht alt aussehen lassen. 20min Flugzeit, 800m Reichweite. GPS,... Dass dies alles in so ein kleines Ding passt ist unglaublich!Wäre genial so ein Ding mal zu testen, aber ich fürchte als Zivilist kommt man nicht an solche Dinger heran...

Looks like a little toy-indoor-heli but from the tech specs it can compete with good FPV equipment. Incredible that they pack 20min flighttime and 800m range into this ting. And GPS! I'd really love to test one of these but unfortunately they give it only to governments...

TBS Discovery / GoPro 3 Black / best Antivibration with Gelblock!!! (uncut, raw 1080p60)

Dieser Flug war eigentlich nur als Testflug zwischendurch gedacht. Ausserdem wollte ich nochmal testen, wie gut der GelBlock anstelle der Ohrstöpsel funktioniert. Als ich mir daheim dann das Material angeschaut hab, war ich total begeistert! Obwohl ich hier mit 1080p60 im MEDIUM Fov Modus flog, waren keine Vibrationen mehr zu sehen (und mein Copter ist nicht gut gebalanced!).
Ausserdem ist mir hier auch aufgefallen, wie gut das neue Mic der Gopro3 funktioniert. Man kann tatsächlich die Motoren hören, und nicht nur ein lautes, unnötiges Windrauschen!
Einige haben schon bemerkt, dass ich den Test bei gutem Wetter und Sonnenschein wiederholen muß - hier gibt's eher sichtbare Vibrationen im Video. Ich warte nur noch auf besseres Video - dann werden wir es wissen!


This was just a test but turned out awesome. It's the best quality footage I got so far out of this platform. New Gopro3 does help a lot of course - but mainly the gelblock creates this wobble free video I always tried to get!
Some commenters pointed out that I should repeat my test on a sunny day - here the cams are more likely to show vibration effects (jello). I only wait for better weather now!
Also let me know how you like such uncut, raw vids from time to time.

Video uploaded directly from sd card - only cut start and end here on youtube.
After uploading 1080p60 material with around 35mbit I was wondering what youtube downsizes it to - so I downloaded all the versions available and the highest quality was 1080p30 with 400mb size (5MBit). So the orig GP3 file is way better and really smooth thanks to the 60fps. But it's quite nice what the YT converter makes out of the lousy 5mbit!
Another thing: did you listen to the raw sound here? It's amazing how detailed the motor sounds are recorded compared what older cams did. Back than it was only noise - now you actually hear the differnt pitches of motorspeeds. GoPro3: Great MIC also!

Drones in Public- great TIMES article...

Here I just found a great, forward thinking positive article about the future of "drones". I feard a paranoid article that feeds the many fears from this technology our hobby is combined with. But this is the message that should go out to the sceptics!

FPV Interessierte werden den Namen noch kennen:
Gabriel hatte uns schon vor Jahren mit seinen riskanten Landungen am Balkon fasziniert (und im Hintergrund die Tolle Kulisse Rios).
Jetzt ist ein neues Video aufgetaucht:

Schladming WM 2013

Hatte im Skiurlaub auch den Copter dabei und konnte die Vorbereitungen rund um den morgen startenden Weltcup in Schladming filmen. Der Eurofighter flog deshalb so knapp über die Stadt, weil er bereits für die Eröffnungsfeier geprobt hat.



Last week we spent in Schladming - a nice Ski Resort where next weeks a series of worldcup skirace will take place. For this event they built huge tribunes and many buildings and advertisments in the whole city. I was able to capture some material there.

The FighterJet - Eurofighter Typhoon flew so close over ground because it was an practise flight for the opening ceremonies.
