Efficient Laptop CPU (Intel I5 1235U) in a miniPC case, lots of drive bays: 6 SATA disk bays (3.5 or 2.5" HDDs) 4 M2 SSDs on 7th bay 2 M2 SSDs on mainboard (if you sacrifice that 10GB NIC) or you can install 2? more PCIe Cards that hold M2 SSDs!
2x 2.5GB NICs 1x 10GB NIC (via an internal M2 slot) 2x Thunderbolt 4 ⚡ (20GB speed if your PC/Laptop supports it!) 4x USB3 A, 1x USBc DP, HDMI, Audio connector
🔥Cooling still bad (even after revision of their first CPU cooler) loud and inefficient, but replace a few fans and this one downside is gone! I designed a custom Back Cover for a super silent 14cm FAN! Link into ONSHAPEor get the STL File
✅SOFTWARE - ZimaOS FINDINGS:
- Old hdds with data on it can be easily enabled! (but some they are sometimes READ ONLY) - Attached ext. USB drives can be shared (no change of share names...) and they are READ and WRITE! - Software UPDATE function via WebUI super easy (there's also the manual USB stick method which is OK, but involves some additional steps) - HDDs might not always go to sleep mode - which can cost 5-10W per HDD! + very easy UI, complex tasks (like setup RAID, shares...) are made very user friendly - limited functionality
Alternatives: many options (if you like to tinker) TrueNas Scale (free, mighty, many options, also confusing) Proxmox, Unraid,... OR... Windows11 / Windows server... which is what I chose in the end
✅POWER CONSUMPTION / PERFORMANCE:
Geekbench 6: Single-Core: 2147 (2051 in Energy saver mode) Multi-Core: 7704 (7440 ="=)
my current QNAP TS431p takes 12w idle, and 42w with 4x 3.5" HDDs active ZimaCube with ZimaOS: no hdds 28.7w 7w standby (If Nas is off! comes from WOL NIC?)
ZimaCube with Win11 as NAS ~ 38w idle power (so it has a bit more overhead, but way more features and convenience)

On this day I had one pack left (which was not on storage charge) and as a good lipo maintainer I felt the need to fly this pack empty ;)
Really happy with what kind of easy FPV experience these devices can deliver now! Can imagine it getting even better with DJI O4 or similar.

This was maybe the best FPV flying we had this year. Great weather (after a foggy morning we drove an hour to reach 3 jawdropping spots. I already flew there but my buddy was overwhelmed by the landscape!
Instead of a long commented video you get something different this time. VERY different. Not sure if everybody will like the "twist" in here (there are also a few dramatic things that happend). Flew there a few times already, but never had such perfect conditions. Calm, golden hour and epic mountain scapes...
First part is commented and NOT stabilized (since it was calm enough). I tried to see if flying fast in manual mode makes less wobble than acro mode on the dives - see how that went!
Later I made a montage with music and stabilized footage (looks really buttery smooth and creamy to me ;)
Thanks Hover82 for once again being a great Chimera 7 chase target (with his yellow props he's good to spot). Chasing a 7" copter up the mountains is one of my fav things to do in FPV.

If you got the Goggles 3 earlier this year when they announced O3 compatibility, you've been in the same situation (or worse). Either you were grounded because of the issues - or you lost your drone somwhere up there...
Since their official "G3 O3 fix" firmware was out I trusted all the brave men who tested this and wasn't dissapointed. Range is good (even with stock antennas), image perfect, fit for my flat face - really nice, and finally I have goggles DVR files with baked in telemetry (no more work - I've done so much different things to embed overlay myself in the past...)
Been to this location many times - and each flight was better than the one before. Luckily no crashes there (yet). Check out these selected videos:

Our annual "Sturmfliegen" wouldn't be as awesome as it is every year without our special guest - Sepp Schmirl - piloting his amazing RedBull Cobra like the pro he is. You rarely see such a level of confidece and experience combined in such an humble rc pilot!
And once again: this video can't transport one important aspect of the impressive show: the smell of cerosine ;)
A bit late in the year I got into my "fixedwing" phase again :) It's more challenging than flying a 7" drone up a mountain - but also more rewarding since you "feel" the wind, the air, the magic moments of flight, aerodynamics - all at once. And you can soar back home from great distances without the range anxiety that comes with copter longrange flying...
Started with my Mars 1200 plane - but then also converted my ARWing Pro to DJI O3 and NO additional Gopro. Tried to achieve CoG without deadweight in the nose and packed the wing full with 18650 cells to get the most flighttime out of it. With 1250g it's still not heavy - and 3 LiIon packs in paralell have better than usual performance as well!

Got my DJI Goggles 3 finally to find them UNUSABLE with DJI O3. I know, MadsTech warned about this - but I was hoping for this issue to be fixed within a month. Still hope they can fix this since it sounds quite easy to change a few lines of code to allow the re-connection on armed drones...
my findings until 25.9.2024:
Goggles 3 Firmware 1.0.400 (most current as of 24.9.24)
O3 Airunit Firmware: 1.03.000 (most current as of 24.9.24)
(G3 Bind: longpress power button!)

To check if you do have a problem, try this:
Before powering up the Goggles 3, power up you drone and ARM it (without props please)
THEN power up the goggles while the drone is already armed
googles will power up and will NOT connect to the drone!
...only after DISARM, they will connect!
Same if you are connected, armed the drone on the bench and walk away with goggles - once bitrate is low enough to loose signal, it wont come back if you go back with goggles into range. Disarm the drone and the goggles re-connect!
Possible blackscreen Issue Causes:
Control Link: nope
on bitrate changes? sometimes
auto lowpower mode on/off? nope
CH manual or auto? nope
FCC or CE mode? nope
Power connection? VBat vs BEC 9V not likely to be related to VBAT / BEC powering
(but wrong power supply voltage can cause similar "brownout" issues of course)

Riding my KTM 390 adventure bike is such a nice addition to flying on random spots in this awesome scenery around here.
ERA works really nice and the ammount of gear needed is minimal. Fast to deploy and that's important since with jacket and helmet and high temps you dont wanna mess around for long.

Here I used the DJI Action 2 mounted to my helmet. Since it supports gyroflow it really works great for such a small setup.

fully electric with dual motors, maybe uphill steep with 90kg rider depletes the battery fast (~20 km)

Feels like Summer - Staffan Carlen
This was the HIGHLIGHT of the whole Italy-Trip, trying to "summit" the highest peak of this region - the Ortler (3902 m) - once it was Austrians highest peak (prior to 1919 where the Hungarian-Austrian monarchy fell apart).
Weather is always a factor of uncertainity - here we had quite good weather, sunny, no wind, but some clouds. With some luck I found a good spot to start from but look up the Ortler in 3D in google maps - it's a bit hard to fly up there... And it was also really INTIMIDATING to even stand there ;)
So glad how those 2 flights turned out, first one with a LiIon and scouting the area, 2nd flight with more powerful Lipo and taking the risk to got up to the highest peaks.
I still have some more flights from this trip - so stay tuned (or even subscribe if you aren't!).

Last week we enjoyed our amazing Italy trip thru South Tyrol / Alto Adige. We visited so many nice spots, mountain roads, passes, highest peak (Ortler) and most impressive curvy road "Stilfser Joch" and I could gather 13 amazing longrange flights with my Chimera 7 - not one glitch or problem. My misses was super supportive while I was amazed and "jaw dropped" behind my DJI Goggles. Yes, I had some face marks after the flights - but it was worth it.

Because of a firend I also converted my own Chimera 7 from "old" DJI Airunit to DJI O3 - and since this I really came back to this great copter. Not the most efficient one (Aura7 is lighter) - but more stable and smooth footy out of it's O3 (the Aura7 still has some micro vibrations)
