ATOMRC Dolphin - not just another review :)

See why everyone is crazy about this now RTF plane, the revised Dolphin from AtomRC, with INAV6 and DJI o3 on it.
Thanks AtomRC for supplying this unit here for the review!
Massive thanks to TJ for helping me with the external shots (don't miss that part starting at 10:22!!!!) check out his channel:  @dynashot1  I create HONEST reviews! If you can support this please check my PATREON Build was quick and easy! - servos, linkages, motor, ESC, FC and GPS were already installed - Wings and vtail needed to be glued on - prepared DJI O3 cable (long with plug for FC was supplied, other end open cables) - connect CRSF RX (on UART 2!) - printed a custom O3 lensmount for the little cutout just behind the nose - make sure o3 has enough cooling! Don't use rocksteady as this makes o3 hotter? - created a little air scoop to help the airflow - installed a heatsink on the O3 (25x25mm) - Tip/correction: bending the cable like I did with the CRSF antenna is not recommended! TECH SPECS: Wingspan:    845mm(33.2") Length:         710mm(28") Weight:         520gr with dji o3 Motor:          2306 1700kv ESC:          30A with 5V/3A BEC seems to be strong enough to supply DJI O3 Servo: 2pcs 9g servo Props:         6~7 inch, incl. 70x40 (cw and ccw) Batteries: 4s 1500-2200mah LIPO or 4sLiIon 3000 or 4000mah good cells (30-40amps) CG on the "nobs" works fine, maybe use a slight bit forward FC has barometer!
SOFTWARE - INAV 6: "horizon hawk" it had INAV 5.1 preinstalled, with basic settings if INAV configurator (use the correct version!) doesn't connect, use the ImpulseRC Driver fixer. It's still a valid tool - and GOLDEN! What better place than this for a drone?

Had this spot on my list for long now and this day (late July) was perfect for a session with my chimera 7. Since my Gopro10 was quite new I needed some confidence by scouting with 2 smaller packs there. From my current perspective (fixedwing mania) I'd love to go there again with 2 or 3 FPV plane wingmen and do epic FPV chase session there! Greets, Mario

Very enjoyable spot, perfect trees! (relaxed commented fpv)

When I take my motorbike to work (which is only 1.5km) I have to make a little detour. If I roam around there, I take a drone with me... you see where this leads (late at work but with a smile on my face! ;)
2 Videos from there: https://youtu.be/oz-XrLqQGwQ https://youtu.be/3czYPzWWJz4 (I flew there with the ImmersionRC Vortex250 and later with then Mojo)

Very relaxing morning exploration flight!

A sub 250gr drone (GepRC Smart35) is allowed to fly almost everywhere! With this freedom I had a few really good flights on this morning (early summer), and since I used the instaSMO4k I got decent footage out of it:
I use 2.7k 30fps for 2 reasons: 1. my instaSMO4k shuts down mid-flight often when in 4k mode 2. youtube dedicates a good ammount of MBit for 1440p30 videos - and they are sufficient high res imho 2.7k60fps would crop in too much (limitation of camera) 30fps in combination with an ND filter works really nice for cinematic stuff. 4:3 raw resolution is great for stabilization (which in my case works directly thru the insta360 studio premiere plugin). FAKE SUPERVIEW tips: Premiere Settings for 4:3 to 16:9 "fake superview": source video: scale of 50% Adjustment layer: Effect "transform 4:3": scale 143% Effect "Lens distortion removal - gopro - hero 4 session - 1080 superview" Curvature: -46 (play around with this)

Longrange Cruiser - Rekon 6 (Review, analog to DJI conversion, Testflights, ND Filter,...)

I was curious if this copter would perform better than the iFlight Chimera5.
I still guess that the Chimera7 would be a better choice for the ultimate mountain surfing copter, but this one is actually quite good and will be my main quad from now on. Banggood supplied this copter for review, but I could only get the analog version and converted it to DJI immediatley. I chose the STOCK DJI cam on purpose - from my experience they are the least susceptible to jello. Had I chosen the POLAR - it would be really hard to get rid of jello! Runcam Mipi or Caddx Polar?

Mipi is definitly faster (in photography terms - fast shutterspeed, less motion blur) while Polar gives the overall nicer and smoother image! See the full review to decide which cam you like more! I'm not so sure if many users will like the Polar on RTF Freestyle quads tho (looks like new quads now rely on Polar/Mipi since they're the only option with stock :)
While filming this I could definitly feel the advantage of 120fps (DJI cam) for freestyle flying!
All flight scenes in the beginning were after sunset and they are in order of filming. So it was of course getting darker but I flew them back to back with little time delay. It's a difference like day and night ;) Yet they share a lot of common properties: 60fps HQ mode only, no cam options to be set (except with solder on joystick...) 16:9 only (but with wider FOV than DJI stock) Small, cheap, AVAILABLE - better than Nebula (except their Pro version).

was Bardwell wrong? Caddx Polar Review & Latency tested

Is this Lowlight DJI FPV cam from Caddx to slow? Is the latency unflyable? How dark of a night can you actually fly? These questions and a few more will find answers in this video ;) Thanks Caddx for sending me this review sample! 3.5" is my new freestyle favorite! GepRC Smart35 Review

GepRC directly sent me this drone for a review and after first flights it was clear to me that I would fly this much more than the usual few flights for a review. Since I didn't feel pressure I could collect enough flights to give you a serious compilation of different spots and thoroughly test this copter. With those small sub250 drones (but flying like a 5" freestyler) you have access to much more spots than with the usual 6S 5" beast which screams through the whole city ;)

O.R.T. Digieyes V2 - DJI FPV dualband Patch antennas

Eko from ORT sent me these antennas SPECIFICALLY created for the DJI FPV drone. Since the V2 goggles and the DJI FPV drone use Occusync3 and here two frequency bands (2.4GHz and 5.8GHz) you need to take care which antennas you use (if you want to move away from the stock stubbies). On V1 DJI we could just use any 5.8GHz antennas (from analog times). One reason to move to such directional aftermarket antennas would be the very limited poweroutput in CE mode. Skip to my conclusion to see the results of my 5 testflights - or get some popcorn and enjoy the show ;)

Scenic Mountain mission (Schneeberg & Chimera5)

After a little hike (on purpose ;) I flew one pack there. Was quite exciting even if I know now that my gear is pretty trusty. Been there in the past, but never had a proper copter to go up all the way. Spent quite some time searching for a nice way to use both: DJI Srt (bitrate) and Tango2 Telemetry Logs for the overlay. If you guys are curious about this workflow - I could do a tutorial... Wonderful location (Scheeberg, Scheebergdörfl) Thanks to the cam-lady for capturing the ext. scenes!

WORLDS FASTEST USB RF Spectrum Analyzer - Aaronia Spectran V6 RSA500x

Aaronia Spectran V6 RSA500x RF analyzer:

  • extremly low POI (probability of intercept, how short of an RF signal spike can the device "see") 97ns (FFT-based) 10ns (I/Q-based)
  • fast sweep speed: over 500GHz/s, it can sweep 6 GHz in less than 10ms
  • RTBW (realtime bandwidth) 120MHz! (can be unlocked to 245MHz)
  • Range: 10 MHz to 6 GHz
  • Dimensions: 210 x 115 x 30 mm, 860gr weight
  • powerbank in same formfactor with 26Ah
  • for mobile use: powerfull laptop! (or reduced fps) larger Powerbank (needs to supply enough WATTS!) or only 120MHz scan rate with one USB 3.2g2

If the parent is missing you wont see a child profile! Profile "Labels" are only visible below a spectrum if in spectrum settings the option "accept profiles" is active! It's better to choose the profiles in "Config" of Spectrum rather than with the Ribbon button... BASIC RF spectrum knowledge:
  • RBW (bandwidth - how accurate do I look at RF?) lower is better (more accurate) but slower sweep
  • VBW (video filter - low (100khz) filters MUCH, FULL settings means highest detail!) higher is better (less smoothing) but you see more noise (set to low if you only wanna see powerfull signals clean)

DJI FPV: ND Filters vs Jello

While this drone doesn't satisfy everybody (especially since it has been overhyped) it's still a pretty good fast flying action cam. Only if you fly slow, or in certain extreme situations you get ugly vibrations that cause wobbly, jello issue in your footage.
Freewellgear NDFilters (they sent me the filters for free)

If you compare DVR (unstabilized) footage vs. Rocksteady stabilized footage from the drone - you see how good the stabilization works - but it's not a magic tool that eliminates all the shakes (like Gopro hypersmooth?). So if we help a bit by reducing the ammount of light on the sensor, the shuttertimes can be longer (1/120 is my suggestion). BUT: you shouldn't stay on AUTO exposure, because the cam tries to increase ISO to get enough light. Well maybe you can stay on auto if you chose the right ND filter for your current daylight situation. You can see this in the camera settings, it actually tells you the EV (exposure value) in manual mode. EV should be 0 or maybe -0.3 while ISO is on 100 (you see in my video that I had to use the ND8). Hope this helps you capture even better footage with this drone, happy flying (and filming), Mario
