Blade mcx - battery problems?

Do you have this heli? If yes, what flyingtime do you get with the standard battery charged using the standard charger?
I got 7,5mins the first few flights, then something happend to either the charger or the battery - now I've only 2mins before it goes down.
Usually I charged with the stock charger until the led was completly off or there were 20secs pause between blinking - that's what the manual said. Suddenly the charger didn't start to blink but rather he was lit the whole time (even beyound 40mins).

Solution: I now use the 5g battery taken from the Silverlit TandemZ (130mah)

and I also solderd a better connector to the copter

so now I can charge the battery with a professional lipocharger. The new battery gives me again about 7.5mins - and this after only about 25mins charging (with 300ma).
Next I'll order an 200mah lipo with 5,1g - this should be the perfect battery for the blade mcx.

Blade mcx - xmas present

After reading and viewing many reviews the Blad mcx got on my xmas-wishlist and finaly under the tree!


Here's my maiden flying around the Christmas tree:


Since my first indoor heli I always wanted to make a flight through my entire home and show you all the rooms. But most of the little toy helis are very inaccurate and you can not go where you want but rather correct the little helis strange flight actions.
Blade mcx is the exception here - it moves right where you tell him to and so this vide was fairly easy to shoot (except for the two crashes :-)

And you surely noticed my moving back to youtube - they greatly improved the quality - so vimeo.com has stronger competition now!

Recently I found this interesting info on the different wing-setups and their aerodynamics. Dave Powers from RCPowers explained this entertainingly and most of all easy to understand. Surely very useful for plane builders!

Twinstar 2 - ready for FPV with panmount

I prepared my FPV setup for the next fine, calm weather (that can take a while).
After my e-Savage RC FPV Car "project" the FPV equipment has been mounted back on Twinstar2 and the learnings from e-Savage (panning the cam isn't a great deal but helps for immersion) helped me to integrate a simple panning-solution on top of my plane.
As for now I'll stay by the lowcost variant with no headtracker:

(under the cam I have a servo coverd in cutout styrofoam - I didn't want to touch the wing itself).
To control the cam I sacrificed the ruder controls - I barely use them anyways in normal FPV flying. They're only useful for soft turns up above - but maybe I'll mix some amount of ruder to the ailerons so make nice smooth turns.

As you may have guessed - I really like the repair-tape - it's very durable and easy to build something.

Silverlit TandemZ1 inside

After many serious crashes the rear rotor quit it's job leaving the TandemZ1 unsteerable. Because of that I had nothing to loose here so I applied my "scalpel" and opened the little heli:



The fullriver battery does a good job here - it gives long 10mins of flight time! (it's an 130mah 3,7v lipo battery)
After some tries I somehow "repaired" the heli - it now hovers wonderful again.

Silverlit Atlas - Mini indoor Toyheli

After my other indoor heli - the Silverlit Tandem-Z finaly quit its service (after one crash too much) I occasionally found this little thing. I was curious how such an easy heli would fly.
The short: it goes were it wants too and you can try to countersteer :-)
The "leaning forward" option is made via two pushbuttons - if you press them - the heli will go forward a bit. With the two joysticks you can change motor and tail rotor. So up/down and spinning is no problem, but going straight in one direction can be quite difficult. My next indoor heli will be the Blade mcx - a koax microheli which looks quite promising.

e-Savage FPV Edition

Due to bad flying conditions I took some FPV training on wheels :-)



Because I had no limitation on size and weight I was able to use a big servo for camera pan. I found it best to set up a mix on my transmitter that moves the cam 50% in the direction of the steering - so the FPV truck looks "into" the curve.

New Cam-Mount

This time I had to find a way to mount the IF OSC flightcam and the Lumix fx35 for recording HD. First I thought about an safebox with foam for protection and vibration dampening but then I came to this design:

It should have less air drag and when using foam under the "feet" of the tripod I should eliminate vibrations.

Twinstar with Landing gear

Here I tried out my custom landing gear. It weights about 150g wich can be a CoG issue. If mounted too far in the forward section - noose-heavy flight; too far backwards and you'll see yourself rubbing your plane's nose in the grass :-)

A thrid wheel would be a possible solution - but that also means additional weight. To small would make a hook of it...

For takeoff it helped giving some extra elevator; takeoff distance is quite short for grass (5-7m?).

My conclusion: nice optics, cool feeling on the start, diffcult landings (material consuming), not safe for FPV so far - no extra benefit - I'll stay without wheels for FPV.

Twinstar FPV: Huyck-Field

This were a few great rounds above my hometown - above the company I work in to be exact.
I did two flights but on one the jaytech stopped recording (no guess why) - so only one landing.

Yesterday I had to FPV a few rounds over the "oakmountain" - the light was fantastic. This time you'll see footage from the JayModCam again, unfortunatly it was pointed up a bit to high...

(If you pause at 00:39 you can see a bright withe building in the background - this is the Lindt & Sprüngli Chocolate Factory and the "Airfield" from the lase vid!)

The mic was covered with foam this time (to prevent heavy noise) - so the air-speed-sound gives you an impression of the actual flyingspeed and motor usage.

I scaled to 640x360 to have smooth vid with 30fps (the old story). I'm still not satisfied with the tele of the jaytech - wide-angle would make a much better overview.

FPV Flight: Foggy Autumn evening

This was my third real FPV flight - and it was great.
Great conditions (only a bit foggy), no technical problems, huge airfield with plenty of space to land...

Next I'm planning to go back to my JayModCam for recording - should give better quality (now I use a USB Framegrabber wich interlaces to vid - this makes it worse).

Gloggnitz viewed from the "Oakmountain"

First of all - this vid has no real landing - rather a crash. I was lucky enough and my twinstar with its brand new cameramount was not damaged. I'm not really sure what happend - easiest explanation would be a bad piloting, a stall during the too hard and too low turn. It could also be that one of the motors had a failure - this wouldn't be that great. After the crash I could successfully test the plane.
Second problem (which is also visible):
the cam settings have to be improved. Maybe it's because of me using only 8,4v instead of the recommended 10-12v. I'll check this first.

Update: now I tried 12v (a small Kokam 3cell 310mah lipo) and the cam works fine - so don't use less than 10v - quality and automatic lighting will suffer from low voltage!
So this was no real FPV flying because you can see that the sunlight could really bother you with this settings.

Twinstar2 - better Cameramount, slightly better Design

After a few tipps I tried this:
 

The cammount hast been bent back and than I tape-wrapped the two supports.
Perspective from there is great, but the ultra-wide angle is weird for FPV flying - I'll sty by the "normal" wideangle.

Twinstar - new FPV Camera mount

Now that I have a new, working FPV cam I made a new cameramount for it. Combined with a wide angle lense it will give me a cool perspective (video should hopefully follow shortly!):
 

I'm not sure how the "cameramount" will affect the aerodynamics - any comments?

Another onboard vid but here I just filmed my normal flying. I flew pretty high - and you can watch the second vid to see an "external" perspetive.
As you can see at the end I'm quite proud of my increasing landing skills :-)

I'd love to combine onboard with external vid but diffrent cams with different fps (24+30) don't mix good in one vid. BTW - this time just 640x480 but hopefully smoother (because here the 30fps of the source material should stay untouched).

Phoenix flying

Finaly she's airborne again! After the last crash I had to do a few repairs, new motors (Permax 480 7,2v) and a new ESC (Jeti 30A). Additionally I placed the JayModCam (that's the nickname I gave her) on the rear rudder as I planned and that worked great.
Now if I manage to cut the h264 material lossless I might also get better quality here. This vid isn't perfect fluid but I was too lacy to cut it again:

Change to english / Flycam Selfmod + new "Groundstation"

Looking on the Stats of my counter and the Clustrmap (Worldmap at the bottom) I changed my mind and will continue this blog in english.

Here's my new modded version of the Jaytech cam:



Design could be better but weight and functionality were more important.
Weight: 71g (incl. 31g for battery - 1250mah, 3,7v)
Using a long cable to the battery you can better balance the weight "onboard".
I plan mounting the cam on the back rudder.

Note: Don't use 5v Bec as source power (I tried to and the cam turns off after a few seconds - it really "prefers" 3,7v!).

Another thing which has changed is my "groundstation". It's basicly a bigger aluminium box with additional space for video receiver and a laptop:



That's it, all I need now is better weather and a working live video-downlink. Unfortunately my modded jaytech gives no direct video-out anymore.

Jay-Tech Cam auseinandergenommen

Nach dem Absturz war leider auch die grad erst gekaufte Cam hinüber. An dieser Stelle bin ich jetzt richtig froh, dass ich von einer wesentlich teureren Digital-Camera auf diese Billigcam gewechselt hab.
Nachdem die Cam wegen Gewicht, Preis und recht anständiger Quali für Videofliegerei recht gut zu gebrauchen ist, bin ich schon nach den Innereien der Cam gefragt worden. Und wie gut man die wohl auseinandernehmen und "abspecken" könnte. Tja - oben sieht man das Ergebnis. Es ist natürlich etwas riskant, sowas mit einem noch funktionierendem Exemplar zu versuchen - aber ich denke es könnte sich lohnen. Nachdem alle "überflüssigen" Teile entfernt waren, hatte das Herzstück nur mehr 31g (ohne Akku - aber vielleicht kann man hier den BEC Strom vom Empfänger abzweigen?).

Ob die Cam so noch funktionieren würde ist jedoch etwas unklar - immerhin schaltet man sie ein, indem man das Display aufklappt - dies hab ich jedoch abmontiert ;-)

12.9.08 Update:
Heute hab ich endlich versucht, an der Cam ein Stromkabel anzulöten (ich hab ein Servokabel genommen). Als Stromversorgung diente dann gleich die 5v Spannung des Empfängers. Und siehe da: es klappt!!! Die Cam funktioniert noch, und wenn man weiß welches der richtige Knopf ist, kann man auch noch aufnehmen.
Somit hab ich ungewollt eine FlyCamOne 3 - HD erfunden, denn mit 31g hat diese Cam auch ned viel mehr, als die FCO2.


Etwas ungünstig ist vielleicht auch die Hochformat Bauweise der Platine - hier kann man sonst nichts mehr weglassen... (die Cam lässt sich aber wahrscheinlich gut am Seitenleitwerk anbringen)

Wie auch immer - Umbauarbeiten auf eigene Gefahr - und viel Glück!

Absturz der Twinstar

Leider ist mir gestern die Twinstar2 abgestürzt - diesmal ist es ein Totalschaden. Ursache: der Standard-Regler (MPX) war der Last nicht gewachsen und ist durchgebrannt. Und dass obwohl ich diesen erst kürzlich Aussen montiert hab damit er ordentlich gekühlt wird (siehe Post weiter Unten).
Fazit und Tipp für andere Twinstar2 Besitzer:
keine 3Zelligen Lipoly Akkus mit dem Standardregler verwenden!!!
Das ist einfach zuviel (11,1v statt 7-8v wie vorgesehen). Die TS2 geht damit zwar am Anfang recht gut, hält aber eben nicht lange!

Was war passiert: in der Luft bemerkte ich plötzlich, dass ich die Motorleistung nicht mehr selbst regeln konnte (die TS2 flog mit Vollgas). Nach ein paar Runden wurde mir dies zu heikel und ich hab den Kippschalter für Motor-Aus auf meinem Sender betätigt. In diesem Moment dürfte der kränkelnde Regler endgültig abgebrannt sein - und da gingen dann auch die Servos nicht mehr - unsteuerbar - Crash (ungespitzt in den Boden!).

FPV Flug mit JayTech Cam

Hier kommt nun das Ergebnis der Basteleien des vorigen Posts:

Der Flug war atemberaubend, die Technik hat funktioniert - der Pilot muss sich erst etwas umgewöhnen (vorher bin ich erst einmal FPV geflolgen - und da hatte ich eine ziemliche Weitwinkel-Linse drauf).

Twinstar 2 - neue FPV Cam

Auf der Suche nach einem besseren Weg, meine FPV-Flüge aufzunehmen, bin ich auf die Jay-Tech DVH24 gestoßen. Diese gab's aktuell als Angebot z.B. bei Schlecker.com um nur 89,90€ (Aufnahme in H264 Codec mit 1280x720 auf SD-Karte (1GB war dabei))
Gewicht samt Akku: 133g!

Das 2,5" Display genügt den Ansprüchen und wird beim Fliegen sowieso abgedreht (wenn man ein Kabel anschließt, und anschließend TV bestätigt, wird das Display deaktiviert).

Kopfhörer-Kabel für Video-Link


Hier sieht man den Klicken-Stecker (da hab ich ein Kabel umgebaut, damit das Videosignal an den Transmitter gelangt).

Tipp: Man kann hier ein normales "Kopfhörer" Kabel mißbrauchen. Einfach die Kabel abisolieren, das "mittlere" Kabel an das gelbe Kabel des Transmitters anschließen, das "äußere" Kabel gehört auf das schwarze Kabel (GRND).
Bei einem Stereo-Kopfhörer Kabel sind natürlich 2 Kabel mit je 2 Drähten drin - welches davon von der Cam Video bekommt muß man ausprobieren (bei mir war das rote Kabel das richtige).



Zu guter Letzt mußte ich noch den Regler aus dem Flugzeug raus verbannen, damit er besser gekühlt wird (er ist mir schon ein paarmal so heiß geworden, dass ich ohne Motor notlanden musste!). So ist er jetzt perfekt gekühlt und macht keine Probleme.

16.9.08 - Update:
Achtung! Der original MPX-Regler hat es nicht gerne, von einem 3 Zelligen Lipo mit 12v versorgt zu werden. Letzten Endes ist er mir abgebrannt - böser Crash - (siehe anderer Post). Stattdessen hab ich jetzt einen Jeti 30A Relger im Einsatz - ich hoffe der funktioniert jetzt besser.

Die Pointe:
Mit diesem Setup, kann ich jetzt gleich direkt im Flieger das Video in 720P aufnehmen (ohne Funk-Störungen) und brauch bei der "Bodenstation" nicht mehr umständlich das Laptop aufbauen. Zusätzlich seh' ich über den Rec. Timer der Cam ziemlich genau wie lange ich schon fliege.
OK, über die Optik und eine professionellere Halterung (anstelle der Gummiringe) sollte ich mir vielleicht noch Gedanken machen :-)

Heli Rundflug - Mollram - Ternitz - Neunkirchen

Gestern, Sonntag den 24.8.08 hatte ich das erste Mal das Vergnügen in einem richtigen Heli zu sitzen. Ich durfte ihn zwar nicht selbst steuern, aber dennoch war das Erlebnis recht eindrucksvoll. Vor allem, wenn man die Städte und Landschaften unter einem kennt, ist diese neue Perspektive fantastisch.
Der Flug war zwar wegen des Windes etwas unruhig aber trotzdem ein einmaliges Erlebnis.

Probleme mit dem Fahrgestell

Das ist mal wirklich eine Reparatur "on the fly".

Indoor Heli

Dieser kleine IR gesteuerte indoor-heli ist mein neuester Zuwachs im "Hangar". Damit kann man auch bei sehr schlechtem Wetter fliegen (natürlich dann nur drinnen :-) Am meisten hat mich die IR-Fernbedienung überrascht - da war ich bis jetzt sehr skeptisch - aber die Dinger funktionieren wirklich! So gut wie eine herkömmliche Funkbasierte.

An die eigentümliche Steuerung muss man sich zwar erst gewöhnen - aber nach ein paar Flügen kommt sehr schnell Flugspass auf! Die bisher unzähligen Crashes hat er bis jetzt recht tapfer weggesteckt.

Twinstar Crash in Pfarra

Der Betreff lässt's schon vermuten - mein Twinstar Flug war heute nicht besonders...

Gleich beim Start hatte einer der Props probleme mit dem Mitnehmer - er ist durchgerutscht - somit hat sich das Flugzeug eingedreht. Zum Glück ist nicht viel kaputt - neue Props werd ich mir besorgen (die aktuellen musste man ankleben - das ist halt nicht sehr stabil.

Das Gute an der Sache: ich hab ein paar neue Flugplätze gefunden (in der Umgebung). Einer davon eben in Pfarra (nahe Prigglitz).

FPV Flug mit Heli

So in der Art hab ich mir FPV Flug mit einem Heli vorgestellt:

Bei mir sieht´s momentan leider noch so aus, wobei ich hier normal, also auf "Sicht" geflogen bin. Momentan fehlt mir einfach noch das Vertrauen in die Technik - da ist mir der Heli einfach zu wertvoll!
Dazu kam bei diesem ersten Test, dass bei Minute 2:33 ein kleiner (aber schockierender) Motoraussetzer mein Vertrauen vermindert hat.

FPV Flug gestern, Funk-Sendeleistung

Gestern hab ich den ersten Videoflug vom Start bis zur Landung rein mit der Videobrille gewagt. Hier das Video (ich hab übrigens zu Vimeo.com gewechselt, da hier die Qualität momentan besser ist als bei Youtube):

Zum Glück ist alles gut gegangen! Es ist aber sehr empfehlenswert mindestens einen braven "Spotter" zu haben (der einen rechtzeitig warnt, bevor man vorher definierte Grenzen überfliegt, bzw. zu niedrig oder hoch unterwegs ist).
Natürlich ist auch ein Reichweitentest von beidem, dem Steuerungsfunk und dem Videofunk, sehr wichtig, damit man weiß, wie weit man sich mit seiner Ausrüstung fort waagen kann (bei mir sind´s momentan 500m).

Die erlaubte Sendeleistung liegt in Österreich bei 100mW (im 2,4GHZ Bereich) für Digitalen Funk aber nur 10mW für Analog!

Twinstar2 FPV Upgrade

Hab endlich meiner Twinstar2 ein etwas besseres FPV Cockpit verpasst:

Multiplex Twinstar 2

Zu meinem ersten Modellflieger (welcher eine absolute Einsteiger-Empfehlung ist) gibts natürlich genügend Infos im Netz.

Mein Tip (darüber hatte ich nämlich im Netz vorher nichts gelesen):
beim Bausatz sind Standard-Luftschrauben dabei, welche auf die Motorenwellen geklebt werden müssen. Das ist halt die Billiglösung, und die funktioniert wirklich nur, wenn man entweder Epoxy-Harz verwendet oder das berüchtigte UHU 300 Endfest (wie in der "Bauanleitung" angeführt).
Wenn man sich das ersparen will bestellt man am besten gleich ordentliche Luftschrauben samt Kupplungen mit, da kann man dann schrauben statt kleben (wäre mir sympathischer gewesen).
Klebt man mit einem Alleskleber oder Sekundenkleber, verabschieden sich die Luftschrauben gerne mal (hoffentlich schon am Boden!).
Also - Luftschrauben + Kupplung:
Graupner CAM SPEED PROP 5,5/4,3
LUFTSCHR.KUPPLUNG 2,3/5MM M.ALUSP.MBL

Weiterer Tipp aus meiner eigenen, leidigen Erfahrung:
der Standardregler wird von einem 3 Zellen Lipo überlastet (ist ja auch nicht dafür ausgelegt!).
Ich hatte aber vom Heli her 3s1p Dinger und hab die auch verwendet.
Besser sowas in der Art verwenden:

FPV / Immersionsflug

Hallo liebe RC-Begeisterte!

in diesem Blog werde ich alles zum Thema RC-Modellbau sammeln.
Beginnen möchte ich mit ein paar coolen Videos zum Thema Immersionsflug.
Dabei baut man sich einfach eine Funk-Videocam in sein Fluggerät ein, und bekommt so die Möglichkeit, sich mittels einer Videobrille direkt ins eigene Cockpit zu "setzen":
