170kph FPV Mountain Dives & Scenery Surfing | AtomRC DolphinPro fixed wing

 !Please watch with 60fps (maybe set your TV to this instead of 50hz), so it's as smooth as intended!

Had some amazing flights with this bird. Not the most efficient one (in fact about 25% less efficient than its predecessor), but avg speed of 100 kph let's you zip around in the scenery, and full throttle gives me 170kph and a bit better handling in gusty conditions (important in the mountains).

I had to get used to this plane. It's dialed in better now, quite reliable - autolaunches always work, plenty of power even for bad throws (see settings in my initial review or directly here)

INAV 8 still gives me pitch oscillations (or "dolphining" up and down with the nose on cruise mode or RTH modes). From OliverC:
- CG ahead of the factory marks (3-5mm), and 3 mm "reflex" on Ailerons (3mm up trim, supposed to fixe the pitch oscillations)
- I use a DELTA mix with AILERONS (as on the old Dolphin) and just mix in 20-30% of elevator on the VTail - this flies better than stock config with traditional elevator

Landings: can be a bit tricky... I found that "flaring" it (up elevator and 0 throttle) to slow it down makes it land like a stone. So a bit of throttle and not to much pull on elev.

Also might install a "fin" on the bottom to protect the prop on landings (don't want to use folding prop). So far the stock props holds up nice.

Stats: These were 12 flights, 1h 52 mins in the air, 22 Ah, 192 km distance covered

I mostly fly 2x 1300 mah 6cell pacs in parallel (lipos from my 5" drones, 10 mins) and also 21700 based 6cell LiIon with 5Ah for longer flighttimes (around 13mins). You have good ammount of space in cockpit to move around batteries for CG. Long Packs work best.

I still run DJI O3 on this plane, ND16 Filter, Gyroflow Plugin in Premiere with stock settings, (Rocksteady off in O3!)

DolphinPro Dives - Path of a Hero

 Not been flying a lot in summer.  Either TOO hot or rainy - no inbetween. Also many windy days. And even this one here was forecasted as low winds - but up there on the ridgeline - Gyroflow really had to work hard to stabilize footage :)  

Super happy with my setup now - INAV 8, 2x 6S 1300mah packs. Not ultra long flighttimes - but good punch and sporty flying.

And if I want more time in the air, I use 6S 5000mah LiIon.

AtomRC DolphinPro Review, flights, chase shots

AtomRC asked me to test the DolphinPro - which was an instant "YES" for me - since I love the previous Dolphin! The new one comes with many improvments - here you see all the details - and I took my time to properly testfly it, give you some INAV insights, mods, and STL files.

SPECS / INFO:
Wingspan: 800mm
Length: 862mm
WingArea: 16.96d㎡
Material: EPP
Motor recommend: 2807 1100KV
ESC: ≥6S 50A BEC
Propeller: 8040-2

WEIGHT:  959g (all except battery)

FLIGHTTIME: 21 min cruising around = 2110 mah (2x 1300mah 6S Lipos)
  so 15-20 mins on 2600mah 6S
  ~25-35 mins on a 5000mah 6S LiIon

BATTERY OPTIONS
2x 1300mah 6S Lipo - far back
1x 1300mah 6S Lipo - all the way fwd
1x 5000mah 6S LiIon pack

GPS altough it's just an BN220 and not a modern M10 - acquisation was quick and sats were plenty

Wingspan a bit shorter than old one, denser foam (at least the grey version),
VTails larger, further in the back,
VTail + Ailerons - plenty options! (spoilerons for landing?, Speedbrake?)
Wingfences - instead of downward facing wingtips (which broke easily)
Control rods "beefier" not the bendy wires
LEDs installed
Nose: different options, magnets + screws - no glue needed
Wire channel below battery for nice Video cable install!

TIPS:
SECURE the LIDs (front one comes with a screw - use it!)
Back LID flew away in a highspeed test (140kph)
Use this "AtomRC Canopy locking arm (verschluss nupsi).stl" and a little bowden tube glued into fuselage with a screw.
I use INAV:  7.1.1 (at the moment)
To have correct MAH readings in your OSD (if you use their AtomRC FC) you can set this SCALE (I've calibrated it and it looks accurate now):

FPV Meet 3/25: Fixedwing chases, 2 rescue missions and RC car madness

 This was a great FPV meet with my friends at our fav spot. Locals are nice there, space to land plenty, great mountain wall and lots of dive lines, mountain is also kind of accessible - although this doesn't always help - as you see in the 2 rescue missions (hint: if you see me using DVR footy, something went horribly wrong ;)

Majestic Valley FPV Adventure: ARWing Chase, Epic Dives, and INAV Autolanding (failsafe)

This was maybe the best FPV flying we had this year. Great weather (after a foggy morning we drove an hour to reach 3 jawdropping spots. I already flew there but my buddy was overwhelmed by the landscape!

Instead of a long commented video you get something different this time. VERY different. Not sure if everybody will like the "twist" in here (there are also a few dramatic things that happend). FPV Dream location: Mountain Dives with ARWing Pro – Gyroflow O3 vs. Raw, Shaky commented FPV!

Flew there a few times already, but never had such perfect conditions. Calm, golden hour and epic mountain scapes... First part is commented and NOT stabilized (since it was calm enough). I tried to see if flying fast in manual mode makes less wobble than acro mode on the dives - see how that went! Later I made a montage with music and stabilized footage (looks really buttery smooth and creamy to me ;)

Thanks Hover82 for once again being a great Chimera 7 chase target (with his yellow props he's good to spot). Chasing a 7" copter up the mountains is one of my fav things to do in FPV.

My most anticipated DIVE (ARWing pro)

A bit late in the year I got into my "fixedwing" phase again :) It's more challenging than flying a 7" drone up a mountain - but also more rewarding since you "feel" the wind, the air, the magic moments of flight, aerodynamics - all at once. And you can soar back home from great distances without the range anxiety that comes with copter longrange flying...

Started with my Mars 1200 plane - but then also converted my ARWing Pro to DJI O3 and NO additional Gopro. Tried to achieve CoG without deadweight in the nose and packed the wing full with 18650 cells to get the most flighttime out of it. With 1250g it's still not heavy - and 3 LiIon packs in paralell have better than usual performance as well! More details and links below!

FPV Meet 4/23: Summer FPV Meet "Rax"

Long overdue was the 4th meeting of likeminded (and similar crazy) FPVers. This time again next to the epic Rax mountainrange. Since it was quite hot we needed the shade and mostly spent time with testing, flying just for fun - only few of us got up to the mountain - others (me included) were a bit cursed with issues ;)

While I really enjoy flying fixedwing - it's amazing how stable the O3 live image of my Aura7 drone is (flew it last on that day after many gusty flights with planes).

ARWing Pro one year later (Cammounts, INAV Setup, OSD...)

Speedbee sent me their F405 Wing FC  (happy they now have wing stuff, told 'em we need it!)

and since my ARWing pro only had a small, half working Matek FC (without a working OSD uart) I re-visted the ARWing. It's great now with a feature rich FC and current INAV version. 

With my other INAV planes I learned a lot over the last month - so here all comes together nice!

Have I mentioned how much I love Autolaunch?  :)

WALNUT Update: while the 1st flight with Walnut was promising (despite the gusty wind), on a hot day Walnut performed poor (the one with dual motor warbird). Many errors in the video file, gyro data way off and stopped recording after 15mins (on a 25mins flight).

So I will try 2.7k mode next (less heat?)

ATOMRC Dolphin - not just another review :)

If you can support this please check my PATREON Build was quick and easy! - servos, linkages, motor, ESC, FC and GPS were already installed - Wings and vtail needed to be glued on - prepared DJI O3 cable (long with plug for FC was supplied, other end open cables) - connect CRSF RX (on UART 2!) - printed a custom O3 lensmount for the little cutout just behind the nose - make sure o3 has enough cooling! Don't use rocksteady as this makes o3 hotter? - created a little air scoop to help the airflow - installed a heatsink on the O3 (25x25mm) - Tip/correction: bending the cable like I did with the CRSF antenna is not recommended! TECH SPECS: Wingspan:    845mm(33.2") Length:         710mm(28") Weight:         520gr with dji o3 Motor:          2306 1700kv ESC:          30A with 5V/3A BEC seems to be strong enough to supply DJI O3 Servo: 2pcs 9g servo Props:         6~7 inch, incl. 70x40 (cw and ccw) Batteries: 4s 1500-2200mah LIPO or 4sLiIon 3000 or 4000mah good cells (30-40amps) CG on the "nobs" works fine, maybe use a slight bit forward FC has barometer!

This was a quite spontaneous meeting but a lot of fun was head (as you see and hear).

Sorry that the audio commentary I now capture as a default with my Zoom H2n mic (awesome device). But as native german speakers we cannot just pretend to speak english all the time.

Hope some of the atmosphere even translates without speaking any german ;)

Met 3 FPV buddies on my home-field to fly fixedwing and have some fun. Was a lot of formation flying practise as well and a reminder on why you should always "check your six" :)

Flew fixedwing FPV for 4 month now - this is what I captured!

I fly FPV since 2008 and it started with a plane back then (MPX Twinstar).

Soon I moved to flying quads - because they are easier to fly, less effected by wind, smaller...

But each year I have my "phase" of wanting to fly with PLANEs. Usually this phase don't last long, since I fall back to the convenience of copters :)

Now with really good options (DJI video transmission, Crossfire controll link and INAV flight controller) this was my longest phase of mostly flying planes!

I've learned a lot with the planes, feel really confident with INAV now. Autolaunch installed on all of the planes - super helpfull! Stability (control surface action against gusts?)  could be better - I guess I need to tune the PIDs there better.

But ACRO mode is so nice! The plane automatically flies straight, without the need for trimming the servos ;)

ARWing pro: 13 flights, 4h 18mins

FPV900: 23 flights, 4h 15mins

Mars 1200: 10 flights, 3h 28mins

Each of these planes has some advantages.

+ efficient  (kind of), can carry a gopro (needs lot of nose weight, so without a gopro you need DEADWEIGHT)

- it's a bit unstable and wobbly still. 

- Launches are not always easy (but with INAV and autolaunch it's easy!)

FPV900:  easy, small wing now with INAV and GPS!

+ it's cheap so the risk is lower - more confidence!

+ works nice with 3000mah LiIon   - or 1800mah Lipos for stunts!

- a bit unstable in high speeds

- noisy motor / Prop combo

MARS 1200:    

my biggest, most grown up FPV longrange plane!

+ A LOT of space, good speed and efficiency

+ super video range (also thanks to the TrueRC singularity 12cm antennas )

- Stalls are ugly, landings not always easy

Or just stick with the stock 85mm! 3300mah Lipo (346gr): 136gr in nose 7000mah LiIon (409gr) + Gopro7: 25gr in the back set motorbrake to MAX: start ESC with FULL THROTTLE (without prop) wait for music, then first beep (brake) go MIN THR. and MAX THR again here wait for 4 beeps (max brake) and again confirm with min/max thr. PNP Setup is good - 8x5 Prop - dont change it to an folding prop, use motor brake setting for less chance of breaking your prop on landing Elevons: 2-3mm up from the wingroot (reflex) if the CG is at stock 85mm maybe a slight bit more for maiden launch to help you! ►Inav 5 for Matek f411 wse: Target: MATEKF411SE_FD_SFTSRL1 S1: Motor S3: Left Servo S4: Right Servo UART1: GPS UART2: CRSF SoftSerial1: DJI OSD (RX=LED, TX=ST1) ►►iNav CLI important setting: set init_gyro_cal=OFF (There seems to be a bug in iNav 5 where the initial calibration after booting causes sa write operation. if you unplug it too soon, this could reset your FC to defaults?) Motor Beeps but doesnt work? motor beeps slowly: no signal (or motor outputs are disabled in iNav!) if it beeps quickly (if activated), this means throttle is not at 0% - ESC needs calibration (not via remote, but via the Motor slider in iNav config) iNav flightmodes: NAV CRUISE (course hold + alt hold) ACRO (if nothing is selected!) RATE mode - helps against the WIND! MANUAL (Passthru) RTH Settings: nav_rth_climb_first = ON Maximum altitude since launch (NAV_RTH_MAX_ALT) Autotune flight Fly a few rounds with enough ROLL and PITCH movements. DON'T Start with AUTOTUNE mode activated (I nearly crashed because of this!)
